Denver Nuggets breakdown and analysis

The Denver Nuggets were facing elimination on Sunday. The Nuggets were down three games to none in their 2022 NBA Western Conference Playoff Series against the Golden State Warriors, but Denver won that game. Heading into Wednesday’s Game 5, the team is still facing elimination, but the Nuggets are confident they will stay alive.

Monte Morris, who was second in scoring for the Nuggets in Game 4 with 24 points, called the Warriors “beatable” and added that the Nuggets have “no pressure” on them heading into Game 5.

The Nuggets have played well in Games 3 and 4, and they held the lead late into Game 3 before losing 118-113.

Denver’s best player, reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, has paced the Nuggets in the past two games. Jokic played 38 minutes in each of those outings and scored 37 points in each game. The Nuggets are going to need him to keep up that pace if they hope to win Game 5. Jokic had 25 points in Game 1 of the series and 26 in Game 2.

Golden State Warriors breakdown and analysis

The Golden State Warriors had a 10-point lead over the Denver Nuggets in the fourth quarter of Game 4. That lead dwindled to 121-119 with 81 seconds left in the game. By the time the game ended, the Nuggets held a 126-121 lead.

Golden State had some issues in Game 4. Draymond Green fouled out with 2:05 left in the contest, and Steph Curry had one of the worst games of his career from the free-throw line, missing four of his 14 free throws.

Steph Curry came off the bench for the Warriors again in Game 4, but he played a series-high 37 minutes in the loss. Curry has upped his minutes every game of the series. He played 22 minutes in Game 1, which was his first game on the court since March 16. Curry led the Warriors in scoring with 33 points in Game 4.

Curry is the Warriors leading scorer in the series with 27.5 points per game, but Klay Thompson (24.5) and Jordan Poole (24.3) are also contributing big numbers.

Green needs to stay available for the entire game. Losing him in Game 4 freed up Jokic, and that’s something the Warriors cannot have if they want to close things out at home.

The Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors played four times during the 2021-22 NBA regular seasonDenver won three of those games (131-124, 117-116, 89-86). Golden State’s one win came in March when they defeated the Nuggets in Denver by a score of 113-102.

Our pick

The time off between Sunday’s game and Wednesday will do the Golden State Warriors good. I expect the team to be rested and ready for an aggressive Denver Nuggets squad. I expect the Warriors to have their play dialed in and I think they will close out the series at home.

Pick: Golden State Warriors to beat Denver Nuggets.
