2022 NBA Playoff Picks: Mavericks vs. Warriors Game 5 Picks

  • Date & Location: Thursday, May 26 at Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif.
  • Time: 9:00 p.m. ET
  • How to Watch: TNT

The Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors are in the 2022 NBA Western Conference Finals. This is the second time the teams have met in the NBA playoffs. The first time came in 2007 when the Mavericks were the No. 1 seed in the West, and the Warriors were the No. 8 seed. The Warriors won that series in six games.

This season, Golden State was the No. 3 seed, and the Mavericks were No. 4. Golden State, who missed the playoffs in 2020 and 2021 after five straight trips to the NBA Final — and three NBA Championships — defeated the Denver Nuggets (4-1) and Memphis Grizzlies (4-2) to earn their spot in the Western Conference Finals.

The Mavericks have not gone this deep into the NBA playoffs since winning the NBA title in 2011. Since then, Dallas has missed the postseason on four occasions and been eliminated in the first round six times. The past two seasons, the Los Angeles Clippers ended the Mavericks’ playoff run in Round 1. This year, Dallas defeated the Utah Jazz (4-2) and Phoenix Suns (4-3) to make their way to the Western Conference Finals.

Golden State had the opportunity to close out their 2022 NBA Western Conference Finals series against the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, but the Mavericks earned the 119-109 victory to send the series back to San Francisco for tonight’s Game 5. Golden State holds a 3-1 series lead and can end the series at the Chase Center in front of a hometown crowd.

Dallas Mavericks breakdown and analysis

The Dallas Mavericks held off the Golden State Warriors in Game 4 of their NBA Western Conference Finals series to stave off elimination. One reason for that win was the 30 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists that team leader Luka Doncic scored. Another reason was that the Mavericks starters had an outstanding game as a whole.

In addition to Doncic, three of the other four starters had double digits in points and two bench players also racked up over 10 points in the 119-109 victory. In Game 3, which the Mavericks lost 109-100, Dallas had three players in total score 20 or more points, but no one else had more than nine.

If the Mavericks are going to send this series to Game 6, they will have to beat the Warriors at home, something that no team has done during the 2022 NBA postseason.

Golden State Warriors breakdown and analysis

The Golden State Warriors could not complete the sweep of the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night in Dallas. That has been par for the course for the Warriors in this year’s NBA postseason. The Warriors failed in their first bid to end their previous series against the Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies. Like Game 4 of the Dallas series, the Warriors were playing those clubs on the opposing court. The good news for the Warriors fans is that when those series went back to San Francisco, the Warriors came back and won those games to end the series. My prediction is the same thing will happen in Game 5 of this series.

Our pick

The Golden State Warriors have lost four games in this year’s playoffs. They have not lost back-to-back games. They have also not lost at home. I don’t see Dallas being the first team to defeat Golden State in back-to-back games in the 2022 NBA postseason.

Pick: Golden State Warriors to beat Dallas Mavericks in Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference Finals.
