NBA Western Conference Futures Picks – Golden State And Phoenix Dominate

The battle to win the NBA’s Western Conference in 2022 has more or less been between two teams since the 2021-22 NBA campaign began. Those teams, the Phoenix Suns and the Golden State Warriors are first and second in the Western Conference and NBA league standings and still the favorites to head to the NBA Finals. Meanwhile, the preseason favorites to win the West, the Los Angeles Lakers, are in ninth place in the Western Conference and continue to slide down the list of favorites to represent the conference in the 2022 NBA Championship.

2022 Western Conference odds

Golden State streaks

The Golden State Warriors worked through a rough patch that ran from January 5 through January 20. During that stretch, the Warriors went 3-6. On January 20, Golden State dropped a 121-117 overtime game to the Indiana Pacers. Since that setback, the Warriors have put together a run of eight straight wins.

That run included a recent 124-120 win over the San Antonio Spurs when the club did not play Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson, who make up three of the top four scorers on the club.

Golden State might be in second place in the West, but they are a team that is built to win.

Phoenix continues to dominate

Anyone waiting for the Phoenix Suns, who won the Western Conference in 2021, but fell to the Milwaukee Bucks in the Finals, to fall is going to have to wait for a long while. The Suns did not suffer a playoff hangover following last year and have played great basketball in 2022.

The Suns are 15-2 in 2022 and 42-10 over the course of the 2021-22 NBA season. Yes, the Suns are Devin Booker’s team, but Chris Paul and Mike Bridges are also an enormous part of the winning culture in Phoenix.

As good as the Suns have been, don’t forget that they won 18 straight games during a stretch that ran from October through December. The Suns have only lost back-to-back games twice during the current season.

Watch the Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies are in third place in the Western Conference with a 37-18 record. Memphis was a +4000 to win the conference when the 2021-22 NBA season began. The Grizzlies have cut those odds in a big way as the season heads into February 2022. Memphis is still a long shot at +1400, but they are a team to watch.

One of the reasons to keep an eye on Memphis this season and going forward is the play of Ja Morant. Morant is in his third NBA season and has improved by leaps and bounds. He averaged 17.8 points per game in his rookie year. In 2021, he jumped to 19.1 points per game. This season, Morant is among the leaders in scoring at 26,4 points per game.

Our pick

With Klay Thompson back in the mix and the Golden State Warriors showing they are coming together as a complete team, it’s hard to pick against them. With that being said, it will not be a surprise to see the Phoenix Suns represent the Western Conference again in 2022.

Pick: Golden State Warriors to win the Western Conference in 2022.
