With the 2022-23 college basketball season quickly approaching, it’s the perfect time to look at who could potentially win it all in Houston next March after Kansas took home the trophy this year. While the likes of North Carolina, the University of Houston, Gonzaga, and Kentucky are among the favorites, there are always teams that surprise everyone. In other words, dark horses. Below, we’ll take a look at two programs, in Tennessee and Indiana, that may be a lot better than expected. Tennessee, Indiana Analysis
The Volunteers (+3500) are a longshot to win a title and although it’s unlikely they do so, there is some value betting on them to make the Final Four. Tennessee went 27-8 last season and 14-4 en route to first in the SEC, ultimately getting upset in the second round of the Big Dance by Michigan, despite being a No. 3 seed. Nevertheless, they’re a threat to contend for the SEC crown again. Rick Barnes’ squad brings back most of their squad from 2021-22 and replaced Kennedy Chandler, their star guard, with Zakai Zeigler. Santiago Vesiavi returns for his senior season, too. One of their most important players will be big man Olivier Nkamhoua, a force down low and a reliable scorer. He got injured last year and missed a lot of time. He will be the X-factor. Barnes also managed to bring in a couple of PG’s in Tyreke Key and B.J. Edwards. You can’t forget 5-star recruit, Julian Phillips, either. After failing to live up to expectations last season, Tennessee cannot be overlooked in the NCAA Basketball Futures. They have experience and lots of depth.
The Hoosiers (+3500) are an even more intriguing option as a dark horse. If you want to talk about a team that will look essentially the exact same, it’s Indiana. 90% of their roster is back, who made the NCAA tournament in 2022. This group is deep and talented. The frontcourt consists of Trayce Jackson-Davis and Race Thompson, with the aforementioned coming off an All-American campaign. Miller Kopp and Xavier Johnson run it back to complement them in the starting lineup, while Jordan Geronimo, Trey Galloway, Tamar Bates are all players with lots of experience off the bench. Also, they added a couple of 5-star recruits, which is definitely a positive considering the Hoosiers usually aren’t a huge contender. Jackson-Davis averaged over 18 points per night to go along with 8.1 rebounds and will have a point to prove. Thompson and Johnson both put up double-digits in points, too. IU is even viewed as the favorite to win the Big 10. That hasn’t been the case for a long time. There is a lot of promise surrounding this group right now.

I still believe it’s probably going to be North Carolina or Houston winning the entire thing in the NCAA Basketball Futures, but there is value splashing a bit of money on both Tennessee and Indiana. The Vols have a very talented roster and did win the SEC. The same can be said for the Hoosiers, who are really expected to make some noise. Just $10 bucks on +3500 odds can make you some serious coin if either program surprises everyone. It’s worth it.
