It’s now under two months until the 2022-23 College Basketball season begins after the Kansas Jayhawks took home the ultimate prize in March as they beat North Carolina in the final. With the campaign approaching, it’s a good time to take a look at some of the possible contenders in the 2023 NCAA Basketball futures. Gonzaga, who lost their best player in Chet Holmgren to the NBA, is a frontrunner at +800. Behind them are the Houston Cougars (+850), Kentucky (+900), and UNC (+1000).

Gonzaga, Houston, & UNC The Ones to Watch
Out of all the teams expected to be in the mix for the 2023 title, these three are the ones who must be taken seriously. Gonzaga disappointed in March Madness, getting knocked out in the Sweet 16 by Arkansas. While they’re about to have a new-look roster following the departures of Holmgren and Andrew Nembhard to the NBA, there is still no shortage of quality on this roster. Big man Drew Timme has returned to Spokane for his fifth year and will undoubtedly be one of the best players in the nation and the leader of the Zags. They also added another frontcourt figure in LSU transfer Efton Reid. Rasir Bolton and Julian Strawther are back with Gonzaga too and round out a very talented group for Mark Few. The Zags have the talent to make a deep run.
Houston isn’t exactly a huge school, but they’ve sure made noise on the college basketball scene across the last two seasons. In 2021, the Cougars lost in the Final Four to eventual champions Baylor and then in March, UH made it all the way to the Elite Eight without two of their best players, Tramon Mark and Marcus Sasser. Both guys are healthy and ready to chase a chip in 2023. Head coach Kalvin Sampson also brought in a pair of solid freshmen in Jarace Walker and Terrance Arceneaux, who should make an impact from day one. There is no telling what Houston is capable of in the 2023 NCAA basketball futures.
Who can overlook UNC? The Tar Heels made a Cinderella run all the way to the final in New Orleans under first-year head coach Hubert Davis. To be honest, nobody gave North Carolina much of a chance after the retirement of Roy Williams. But, this team surprised everyone and even knocked out their ACC rivals, Duke, in the Final Four, ending Coach K’s time in the sport. The reason the Tar Heels are such an intriguing bunch for 2023 is the players that are returning to Chapel Hill. Brady Manek is about the only notable player to leave last season’s team for the professional ranks. Leaky Black, Armando Bacot, and Caleb Love are all looking to win a championship after knocking on the doorstep in 2022, with Bacot a hot commodity amongst NBA scouts for next year’s draft. Black and Love should get some looks, too. Plus, Davis managed to lure in Northwestern big man Pete Nance, only making the UNC frontcourt even better. The experience that North Carolina gained in March cannot be ignored. This team should not only be considered a favorite to win the ACC but the whole shebang.
Kansas will have essentially a whole new team. I don’t see them doing much despite winning it all in 22′. Duke is heading into a brand new era without their legendary head coach, while Kentucky is usually a disappointment in the Big Dance. At this point, it looks to be Houston, Gonzaga, or UNC as the 2023 NCAA Basketball futures pick. In my opinion, North Carolina is the best bet. The chemistry and confidence this program has after losing an absolute nailbiter to Kansas will be fresh in their mind and motivate them all season. At +1000, you better jump on this now. It may be worth gold.
