The big picture
The defending champions are safely through to the Sweet 16 in the women’s 2025 NCAA Tournament. South Carolina punched their ticket to the next stage by defeating the No. 9 Indiana on Sunday.
South Carolina was one point down at the halfway point. But a strong third-quarter showing turned the match and the Gamecocks ran out comfortable 64-53 winners.
The Gamecocks will face the No.4 Maryland Terrapins in the Sweet 16. Maryland booked their place in the last 16 with an overtime win against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Monday.
The Terrapins had to overcome 45 points by Alabama’s Sarah Ashlee Barker and a 17-point deficit in the third quarter to seal their 111-108 second-round victory.
Now let’s take a look at the latest betting to win Friday’s Sweet 16 showdown.
South Carolina vs. Maryland Betting
The 2025 women’s NCAA Tournament is now at the serious stage, and this is reflected in the betting.
The best March Madness betting sites didn’t offer a money line on South Carolina’s matches in the first and second rounds. They are in the Sweet 16.
That said, the money line still heavily favors the Gamecocks. South Carolina is -2400, Maryland is +1200.
After giving away 40-plus points on the handicap spread in the opening round, the spread is down to 17.5 for the Sweet 16.
The Terrapins are -110 with a 17.5-point start. South Carolina is -110 to win by 18 or more points and cover the spread.
The total line is set at 150.5. Both over and under is -110.
South Carolina has scored 172 points in the NCAA Tournament, 108 against TN Tech, and 64 against Indiana. However, they have given up 101 points in their two matches (48 vs. TN Tech and 53 vs. Indiana).
The Terrapins scored 82 in their first-round win over Norfolk State, and 111 against the Crimson Tide in round two (83 in regulation time). Maryland conceded 69 to Norfolk State and 108 to Alabama (83 in regulation time).

South Carolina
South Carolina is the No.1 seed to win the NCAA Tournament and also the defending champion. The Gamecocks finished T-1st in the SEC points table with a conference play record of 15-1.
The defending champs are yet to be really tested in the postseason March Madness. They battered TN Tech 108-48 in round one in a nonevent, easily covering a 43.5-point spread.
Things weren’t as easy in the second round, but it was still a comfortable win. The Gamecocks were 12-9 down to No.9 Indiana at the end of the first quarter and 26-25 behind at the end of the second.
Dawn Staley’s team then put their foot on the gas in the third quarter, scoring 26 points, while only giving up 14. That finished the match off as a contest, and the Gamecocks won 64-53 in the end.
The Gamecocks are second favorites to win the tournament. The defending champions had been the favorites up until UConn’s 91-57 annihilation of South Dakota on Monday.
Since that emphatic victory, the bookmakers have flipped back and made UConn the +160 betting favorite. South Carolina is second in the betting and very close behind at +180.
Maryland
The No.4 seed Maryland Terrapins finished the T-3rd in the Big 10 with a 13-5 conference record.
Brenda Frese’s team briefly trailed the Norfolk State Spartans at the end of the second quarter in their first round. A storming third quarter put the Terrapins back in charge and they ran out comfortable 82-69 winners in the end.
Their second-round showdown with Alabama State was less straightforward. The Crimson Tide held a 17-point lead at one point in the third quarter.
But a remarkable fightback saw the Terrapins close the gap to nine at the end of the third and then level the game at 83 points each at the end of regulation time.
Two extra sessions were then needed to decide what was the game of the tournament so far, with the Terrapins winning a thriller 111-108.
Maryland is +1200 to cause a huge upset and defeat the Gamecocks. They are +10000, to cause an even bigger shock and win the NCAA Tournament.
South Carolina vs. Maryland Betting Picks
The competition is getting tougher for the Gamecocks, and as we witnessed in their 11-point win over the No.9 Indiana, they are not having things totally their own way.
The Maryland Terrapins have just shown they are up for the fight in their win over Alabama, and although we don’t see them beating South Carolina, we can see the Terrapins getting close enough to win with the spread.
