The 2022 PlayStation Fiesta Bowl sees the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish matched up against the No, 9 Oklahoma State Cowboys at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Notre Dame finished the season with an 11-1 record. The team’s only loss came in early October when they dropped a 24-13 game to the Cincinnati Bearcats. Oklahoma State, who wrapped up the 2021 NCAA football season with an 11-2 record lost in October to Iowa State and then finished the season with a 21-16 setback against Baylor. The Oklahoma State Cowboys were the No. 1 team in the Big 12.

Fiesta Bowl Odds:

Oklahoma State vs. Notre Dame

On paper, from a coaching standpoint, Oklahoma has to be the favorite here. Mike Gundy has been on the sidelines for the Cowboys for 18 seasons and he has gone 10-5 in bowl games. As for Notre Dame, Marcus Freeman is coaching his first game for the Fighting Irish after Brian Kelly left for the LSU head coaching job.

I actually think the new coach gives Notre Dame a bit of an advantage. Freeman and his team are going to be ready for this game and fired up to prove that Kelly, who it seems, was not a very popular figure with the team, was not the one who was responsible for the team’s success. Gundy is going to have to find a way to get his team fired up after falling short of the College Football Playoffs.

On the field, the Oklahoma defense needs to shut down the running game of the Irish. If the Cowboys can force Notre Dame quarterback, senior Jack Coan to rely on his arm, they should be able to keep Notre Dame from taking control of the game.

If Oklahoma is without running back Jaylen Warren, the game could go very wrong for the Cowboys. The team was without him against Baylor and that put a lot of pressure on quarterback Spencer Sanders. The junior QB threw for four interceptions and zero touchdowns in that game.

Fiesta Bowl Best Bets

Pick Notre Dame to win. Notre Dame is the more complete team in this matchup. They don’t rely on one or two specific players to get things done. Oklahoma does and even if Warren plays, the Notre Dame defense can key on him and that could be bad news for Oklahoma.

Pick Notre Dame to cover. The Fighting Irish have a good offense and they should be able to put up the points they need against Oklahoma.
