Boise State Names Joe Southwick Starting QB

Coach Chris Petersen named junior Joe Southwick the starting quarterback for the 2012 Boise State Broncos as they will start the season as a 7 point underdog against Michigan State next Friday.

Boise State Names Joe Southwick Starting QBSouthwick has been the No. 2 quarterback behind Moore for the past two seasons for the Broncos. “What he does best is he can run the show for us,” Petersen said of Southwick. “He can be like a coach on the field out there, and he knows where people are supposed to be, when they’re supposed to be there.”

“He’s prepared really hard the last three or four years, and he’s earned this opportunity,” Petersen said in Boise on Sunday.

For Southwick, it won’t be an easy task to be the backup of the winningest quarterback in college football, but he will try his best against the Spartans on Friday.

“When I look at their team, you just see them being so fundamentally sound,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said of the Spartans during a Sunday teleconference. “You know you’ve got a well-coached team when you see those things on tape. They don’t give you anything. You’ve got to earn everything. There’s not broken assignments or those types of things.

“And then they’ve got really good players to go with it. So they’re doing the whole thing. They’re recruiting right. They’ve got very good schemes. They keep you off balance. And those kids play fast.”

The game total of this match is set at 45.5. Let the Southwick era begins.
