CFP National Championship Odds After Week 0

  • BetOnline has updated 2020 CFP National Championship odds after the Week 0 game between the Gators and Hurricanes 
  • Georgia (+700) will look to dethrone two college football heavyweights in Clemson (+250) and Alabama (+275)
  • Notre Dame (+4000) might be undervalued after winning 22 of their past 26 games

Last weekend, ESPN struck ratings gold with a “Week 0” contest between eighth-ranked Florida and Miami that became the highest-rated game on the network in almost three years.

While the Gators prevailed 24-20, their sloppy four-turnover performance actually caused their title odds to dip down to +3300 from +2500 just last week.

With Week 1 bringing a full slate of college football action, let’s look at the latest National Championship odds at BetOnline.

GEORGIA BULLDOGS

Last week, we debated whether Alabama or Clemson is the better bet to win the National Championship, so let’s focus on the school that has the best shot to topple the two programs that have lorded over college football for the past four years.

After squandering second-half leads to Bama in each of the past two seasons, this Georgia team may go down as one of the most dominant squads in college football history never to win a national title, according to FiveThirtyEight.

UGA’s offense and defense ranked as top-five units in 2017 and 2018, and their talent on both sides of the ball remains strong this year. Star quarterback Jake Fromm is back for one more chance at glory, but two of his top pass catchers (Mecole Hardman and Riley Ridley) are now in the NFL.

Perhaps even more problematic is that the Bulldogs’ schedule ranks as the fourth-most difficult in the country.

FLORIDA GATORS

Feleipe Franks gave both his fans and detractors added ammunition after accounting for three touchdowns and three turnovers a piece in Florida’s “Week 0” victory over the Hurricanes.

Heading into the year, there was a lot of optimism surrounding the 6-foot-6 dual-threat QB after he helped the Gators win their last four games, including a destruction of Michigan in the Peach Bowl. However, Franks is now drawing criticism for acting overly cocky throughout his sub-par performance in the season opener.

Considering Miami’s defense is one of the best in the country, and that Franks threw for 24 touchdowns against just six interceptions in 2018, expect both Florida and their 21-year-old quarterback to look crisper next time their on the field.

NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH

Notre Dame went undefeated (12-0) in last year’s regular season before getting bludgeoned 30-3 by Clemson in the CFP Semifinal.

The bleeding continued into the NFL Draft where the Fighting Irish lost six key contributors, including DT Jerry Tillery, WR Miles Boykin, CB Julian Love and RB Dexter Williams.

Despite winning 22 of their last 26 games, bookmakers have Brian Kelly’s team as 40-1 longshots to win the College Football Playoff.

However, PFF believes senior signal-caller Ian Book and an “elite offensive line, edge unit, and secondary” is enough to make the Irish a serious contender.

With a game against Georgia in week 3, we’ll find out soon enough.
