The Indiana Hoosiers are 4-0 this year and there’s a lot of attention on quarterback Fernando Mendoza. The young quarterback has been strong this football season and he was superb against Illinois last weekend. In the Week 4 victory for the Hoosiers of Indiana, Mendoza was great and he had no problems dicing up the Illinois defense.

On the day, Mendoza completed 21-of-23 pass attempts for 267 yards and five touchdowns. Thanks to that showing, the rest of the country is taking notice of how good he is. That’s why a lot of people are talking about the fact that Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza takes over as the new Heisman favorite. This is exciting for Indiana fans and it’s no surprise that Mendoza is the new favorite over Carson Beck.

Carson Beck is no longer the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy – Fernando Mendoza is
“The player development here, especially this staff, their last four quarterbacks have all been players of the year and the only one that wasn’t was Kurtis Rourke, who finished in the Heisman voting last year,” Mendoza said via CBS Sports on his decision to transfer to Indiana.
That decision to transfer to Indiana has proven to be amazing for the Indiana Hoosiers. The team is ranked No. 11 in the country and plenty of the projections for the College Football Playoff have them expected to be among the final 12 still in the hunt to compete for a college football national championship. If that happens, Mendoza will need to be at his best for the rest of the year.
John Mateer holds the second best college football odds to win the Heisman Trophy this winter, as he’s also playing so well for the Oklahoma Sooners. Carson Beck was previously the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, but Mendoza has passed him there thanks to how great he has looked in four games.
Mateer, Mendoza and Beck all are transfers and they’re playing well for their new teams. Beck and Miami beat Florida in Week 4, Mateer and Oklahoma beat Auburn, and Mendoza and Indiana beat Illinois. In two weeks, Miami is going to take on Florida State and a win for the Hurricanes of Miami could propel Beck over Mendoza again depending on what the score is.
However, the Indiana quarterback, a veteran of the game, is the current leader and he has surprised a lot of people with his exceptional season. Fernando Mendoza has thrown for 975 yards and 14 touchdowns, with no interceptions to his name. He’s a great player and it could lead to him earning Heisman Trophy honors later this year.
