The John Mateer Broken Bone Changes Things for Oklahoma and CFP odds

The Sooners of Oklahoma have received John Mateer news that’s going to change the outlook of their entire season. The superstar player who transferred from Washington State suffered a broken bone in his throwing hand and he’s going to miss around a month. Because of this, it’s a fact that the John Mateer broken bone changes things for Oklahoma and CFP odds as a whole.

John Mateer has been one of the best quarterbacks in College Football this season and him missing around a month is terrible news for Oklahoma and head football coach Brent Venables. With Mateer out, Michael Hawkins Jr. is going to be the new starting quarterback for Oklahoma, but he’s not at the same level. Because of that, Oklahoma’s college football betting odds to win the CFP have gone down.

John Mateer Injury: Oklahoma quarterback will miss around a month with a broken bone

“After consulting with medical experts, it became clear that surgery is the best option for John and his short- and long-term future,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said in a release. “He’s extremely disappointed he will miss some game action but is eager to correct the issue and move forward. As he is with everything, we know he will be aggressive with his rehabilitation and work to return to the field as quickly as possible.”

According to the best sports betting sites, Oklahoma’s college football betting odds have dipped. Before the injury, the Sooners of Oklahoma had +1500 odds to win the National Championship Game this year, but that number has dropped to +2200. Hawkins is a talented quarterback, but he has major shoes to fill with Mateer hurt.

Mateer also saw his Heisman Trophy odds take a tumble as well. He was previously plus +900 to win the honor per the college football betting sites, but now that number is +2300. When Mateer is healthy, he’s one of the best players in college football, but now this major adversity has arrived for him. Will Oklahoma be able to ride out the storm and still be in the CFP hunt by the time he gets back?

Oklahoma is on a BYE this week, but then the Sooners of Norman will be back on the field next weekend to take on Kent State. Then on Oct. 11, Oklahoma and Texas will face off in the annual Red River Rivalry game. That’s a huge game and it’s one that people can’t wait for.

The terrible news, though, is that Mateer won’t be able to play unless there’s some sort of a miracle recovery. It’s more than unlikely. Even when Mateer does return, there’s worry that his hurt hand is going to linger and give him issues for the rest of the season.

Mateer suffered his injury in the win over the Tigers of Auburn last week, but now Oklahoma fans need to get ready to be without John Mateer for a little while. It’s safe to say his injury has changed everything for college football and not in a good way at all for Oklahoma. It’s a rough update for the Sooners and Brent Venables.
