The start of the 2022-23 NCAA football season is still some months away. The first games aren’t scheduled to take place until August 27 of this year. But that doesn’t mean there is no interest in how the season will end and who will walk away with the 2023 national championship.
Alabama, Michigan, Georgia and Cincinnati took part in the 2022 College Football Playoff. In the semifinal round, Alabama defeated Cincinnati by a score of 27-6 and Michigan topped Georgia 34-11. Alabama
The Alabama Crimson Tide loses a great deal of talent at the end of every season. However, coach Nick Saban, who has been leading the team since 2007, also has a stockpile of talent ready to replace the departing players. Instead of looking at the players who won’t be on the team in 2022, focus on two key players who will remain with the squad — Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Bryce Young and standout linebacker Will Anderson, who lead college football in sacks and tackles for a loss of yards.
Alabama also added two important transfers in running back Jahmyr Gibbs from Georgia Tech and cornerback Eli Ricks from LSU.
Georgia
With the 2022 National Championship secure in their trophy case, will the Georgia Bulldogs be able to successfully defend that title? The team has a favorable schedule in 2022-23 and could go undefeated in the conference – which it did last season and overall — which it did not do last season — losing 41-24 to Alabama on December 4. Georgia’s elite defense will look different in the upcoming season, but the expectation is that the team will still be strong on that side of the ball.
Michigan
Of the top teams in 2021-22 the Michigan Wolverines, who won the Big Ten Championship, seem to have the most questions surrounding them heading into the 2022-23 campaign. The offensive line, which won the Joe Moore Award — which is given to the Most Outstanding Offensive Line Unit — lost three of its five starters. The team’s top running back. Hassan Haskins has declared for the 2022 NFL Draft.
The Wolverines got some good news recently with head coach Jim Harbaugh inking a five-year deal after a brief period where it looked as if he would leave for an NFL job.
Cincinnati
When the list of players who were invited to the NFL Combine was published, it contained eight players from the 2021-22 Cincinnati Bearcats. The loss of that type, and quantity, of talent is going to be hard for head coach Luke Fickell to replace and that’s the main reason Cincinnati is very low in the early rankings for the top NCAAF teams in 2022.
Ohio State
The Ohio State Buckeyes did not make the College Football Playoffs in 2021-22, but they are the team to watch in 2022-23. The Buckeyes will keep most of their best players in 2022-23, including potential Heisman Trophy challenger C.J. Stroud at quarterback. Outstanding receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who had 347 receiving yards in the Rose Bowl, will also be back. Ohio State also has an outstanding recruiting class heading to the field in 2022.
Our pick
This season is likely to come down to Ohio State and Alabama, and I think it’s Ohio State who will walk away with the 2023 NCAAF National Championship.
