Indiana capturing the national title underscored how much the college football hierarchy has evolved in recent seasons. With the playoff format, NIL money, and the transfer portal redefining roster building, the sport looks far different than it did just a few years ago.
Still, the betting market is leaning on tradition. Ohio State has opened as the frontrunner to claim next year’s championship, sitting on similar odds to established powers such as Notre Dame and Texas.

Ohio State are among a tight group of favorites on the futures board at +700 (+800 on some sites) to capture the championship. Also there are at +700 are Notre Dame, Texas and Indiana.
Ohio State and Notre Dame squared off for the title in 2025. Texas advanced to a national semifinal a year ago. Notably, all four programs return their starting quarterbacks.

The Buckeyes are the safest bet for the title based on returning talent and program stability. With Heisman finalist quarterback Julian Sayin back under center and elite wideout Jeremiah Smith on the roster, OSU still has the key playmakers to compete at the highest level despite losing NFL-bound defensive stars. Notre Dame
Notre Dame generated significant debate after being left out of this year’s College Football Playoff, yet the program has remained firmly in the national conversation during Marcus Freeman’s tenure.

The Hoosiers are also set to part with their top two running backs, leading receiver Elijah Sarratt and several key defensive pieces from a unit that powered their CFP run. Still, Curt Cignetti has once again worked the transfer portal aggressively, bringing in quarterback Josh Hoover from TCU and wideout Nick Marsh from Michigan State to headline the incoming group.
The question now is sustainability. Cignetti’s track record suggests Indiana won’t fade quietly, but many foundational contributors from the past two years are moving on. Even so, early futures pricing indicates the Hoosiers are expected to open the season ranked among the top five nationally.
Texas Longhorns
Texas opening near the top of the board is sure to draw some skepticism after beginning last season as the preseason No. 1 and falling short of expectations. Arch Manning heads into 2026 with a full year as the starter, and the Longhorns boosted their receiving corps by landing former Auburn standout Cam Coleman via the portal. If the offensive line takes a step forward, the skill talent is in place for Texas to make a serious run. Still, there will be far more caution surrounding the Longhorns this time around compared to the optimism that surrounded them entering 2025.
Oregon
Oregon will spend the offseason trying to move past its lopsided semifinal loss to Indiana, a result that’s hard to ignore. Still, there’s stability at the game’s most important position. Dante Moore has chosen to return to Eugene rather than enter the draft.
Moore impressed in his debut season as the full-time starter, even if his struggles in that playoff matchup remain fresh. With another year of development, the Ducks will expect him to take the next step.
Other Contenders
Rounding out the top 10 are Georgia (+1100), followed by a cluster of teams at +1400 to +2500: LSU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Alabama. LSU’s placement reflects confidence in Lane Kiffin engineering a swift turnaround after his high-profile jump from Ole Miss. One of his first major additions was quarterback Sam Leavitt, who transfers in from Arizona State.
Miami Hurricanes (+1400) came within a possession of possibly claiming this season’s championship and return standout receiver Malachi Toney. They’ll be breaking in a new signal-caller with Carson Beck out of eligibility.
