While only one of the teams playing in Saturday’s SEC matchup between Tennessee and Vanderbilt, the game is not without some stakes. The Tennessee Volunteers need a win to help their chances of possibly landing a home game in the opening week of the 2024 College Football Playoffs. As for the Vanderbilt Commodores, they are bowl-eligible this year, and a win on Saturday will give the team a winning record for the first time since 2013. These teams have played 117 times, Tennessee has the better record at 80-32-5. The last meeting between the Volunteers and Commodores took place last November, with Tennessee beating Vanderbilt 48-24. Here is some background on the teams before we look at the pivotal Week 14 NCAA football betting breakdown.

Tennessee (9-2, 5-2) followed their 31-17 loss to Georgia in Week 12 with a 56-0 blowout of UTEP in Week 13. The Volunteers’ other loss of the season came in early October when Arkansas downed them 19-14. Tennessee is in third place in the SEC.

Vanderbilt (6-5, 3-4) scored their biggest win of the season in early October when they defeated Alabama 40-35 when the Crimson Tide were the No. 1 team in the nation. Things have not gone well for the team as of late. The Commodores are 1-3 in their past four outings and coming off a 24-17 loss to LSU in Week 13.

Tennessee Volunteers betting breakdown

This is not a gimme for the Tennessee Volunteers. This year’s Vanderbilt team might have overachieved and they might be in a bit of a funk over the past few weeks, but the Commodores a dangerous team and the Volunteers must take this game very seriously or risk falling short against a club that will be looking to prove a point in Week 14.

The Volunteers need a big game from freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Iamaleava has played well this year overall, but his numbers against SEC foes are not great at 61.3 completion percentage, 192 yards passing per game and, five touchdowns. Against non-SEC teams he has a 71.1 completion percentage, 226 yards passing per game, and 10 touchdowns. That’s a big difference. He has seven conference games and four non-conference games. It is important for Iamaleava to stretch the field and give his team a cushion when it comes to scoring, which will force Vanderbilt to play a game they are not comfortable doing.

Vanderbilt Commodores betting breakdown

Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea has his team performing well in 2024 and with a win on Saturday, the Commodores will finish the year with a winning record, which is an enormous improvement over their 2-10 mark from last year when they went 0-8 in the conference. One reason the team is playing so well is their faith in their coach and their quarterback, senior Diego Pavia, who joined the team after two years with New Mexico State. One of the most competitive players in college football, Pavia has the team believing in him.

Scoring has been a problem for Vanderbilt in its past three games, where they put up 17, 7, and 17. Their highest scoring games since mid-October was their 24-14 win over Ball State and a 27-24 loss to Texas. They must find a way to score on Saturday or hold Tennessee off the scoreboard, which will be an issue since the Volunteers are the second-highest-scoring team in the SEC with an average of 37.4 points per game. Vanderbilt’s best bet is to implement a running game and take large amounts of time off the clock every time they have a possession. They also need to break down a deep Tennessee defensive line.
