USC to sneak by Utah: 2022 Pac-12 Championship Picks

  • USC (11-1) is a 3-point favorite over Utah (9-3) as it looks to avenge a 43-42 loss earlier in the season
  • Lincoln Riley’s club can secure a berth in the college football playoff with a victory
  • The 2022 Pac-12 Championship Game will kick off from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas this Friday at 8 pm E.T.

Win and you’re in. That’s the scenario facing the Trojans heading into Friday night’s Pac-12 Championship Game. However, earning a spot in the College Football Playoff won’t be easy against a Utah team that ranks in the top-20 nationally in both scoring offense and defense.

Trojans keep winning

With slip ups from Clemson, Ohio State and LSU last weekend, Lincoln Riley will secure a spot in the four-team CFP tournament in his first season at USC with a victory against Utah on Friday night. Just as impressively, the Trojans head coach has yet another Heisman Trophy winner under his wings. Caleb Williams is a -3000 favorite for the award.

After putting up 267 yards total offense and four touchdowns in a 38-27 win over No. 15 Notre Dame on Saturday, Williams will soon join Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray as the latest QB in Riley’s offense to strike a Heisman pose.

Utah has a chance to repeat

Utah is in the Pac-12 Championship game for the fourth time in the past five years. The Utes’ conference title hopes looked all but dead after a three-point loss to Oregon a few weeks back. But, they clobbered Colorado 63-21 on Saturday and all their Pac-12 rivals lost, sending them back to Allegiant Stadium for the second-straight season.

Kyle Whittingham’s squad trailed the Trojans by 14 points in the season’s first meeting before storming back for a 43-42 victory. Finishing with 415 passing yards and five total touchdowns, Utes QB Cameron Rising scored the game-winning TD and two-point conversion with just 48 seconds left in the game.

Trojans vs Utes

No. 6 USC is a 3-point favorite over Utah in Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and the over-under is set at a sky-high 67 points. Everything seems to be set up perfectly for Lincoln Riley in his first year at Southern California, but Kyle Whittingham can’t be underestimated either. With the victory over Colorado on Saturday, the Utes have 11 seasons with 9+ wins under his watch.

Utah will be without Tavion Thomas as the star running back recently declared for the NFL Draft.  However, Ja’Quinden Jackson (117 yards, 3 touchdowns) and Micah Bernard (91 yards, 1 TD) more than picked up the slack against the Buffaloes last Saturday.

Best Bet

Caleb Williams passed for 381 yards and five touchdowns in a losing effort versus Utah in October. The soon-to-be Heisman Trophy winner hasn’t lost since, putting up video-game numbers throughout the season.

While the Utes will put up a fight, look for Williams and Riley to cap off a special season with a Pac-12 Championship and berth into the College Football Playoff.

Final Score Prediction: USC 35, Utah 31
