Purdue Boilermakers vs. Tennessee Volunteers
Purdue and Tennessee both finished the 2021 NCAAF season strong. Purdue went 4-1 in its last five games, while Tennessee wrapped things up at 3-1. The losses the teams had during that time were to powerhouse clubs. Purdue fell to Ohio State and Tennessee lost to Georgia.
Purdue’s biggest wins of the season came when they defeated Iowa (No. 2) in October and early November when they topped Michigan State (No. 3). Tennessee struggled against ranked teams, losing to Pittsburgh, Florida, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Georgia. The team’s only victory against a ranked opponent was its November win over Kentucky (18).
The player to watch for Purdue is quarterback Aidan O’Connell. O’Connell, a senior, ranked 19th in the NCAA in passing yards this season with 3,178. He had 23 throwing touchdowns in 11 games and eight interceptions. His completion percentage was 73.5 percent and his average completion went for 89.1 yards.

Hendon Hooker quarterbacks the Volunteers. The senior threw for 2,567 yards this year with 26 touchdowns and three interceptions. His completion rating was 69 percent, and he averaged 9.8 yards per completion.
The difference in this game could come down to the Purdue passing game vs. the Tennessee defense. The Volunteers gave up an average of 261.2 yards per game in the air. When the game was a road game and although the Music City Bowl will be in Tennessee, it is not a home game per se, that number jumped to 325.5. O’Connell averaged over 400 yards in the air in his last four games and he put up 536 against Michigan State.
Music City Bowl Best Bets
Pick Purdue to win. I think O’Connell will find success in the air in this matchup and his passing will be what carries the Boilermakers to victory.
Pick Purdue to cover. The Boilermakers have more victories over big-name teams than the Volunteers this season and those wins are going to give Purdue the confidence it needs in this game. I think they’ll cover the spread in this one.
