Texans to tame Lions on Sunday Night Football in Week 10

  • Houston (6-3) is a 3.5-point home underdog against the Detroit Lions (7-1) in Week 10
  • Texans receiver Nico Collins is eligible to return from a multi-week stint on injured reserve
  • Sunday Night Football kicks off from NRG Stadium in Houston, TX at 8:20 pm ET

After reeling off six-straight wins, the Lions are 7-1 for the first time in the Super Bowl era. Dan Campbell’s squad clobbered the Packers 24-14 at Lambeau Field and now travel south for an indoor game with a Texans team coming off a 21-13 loss to the Jets. With star wide receiver Nico Collins eligible to return on Sunday Night football, can C.J. Stroud get Houston’s offense back on track?

Detroit dominates again

Jared Goff once again had a pedestrian stat line (145 passing yards, TD) but the Lions’ 24-14 win over Green Bay was never in doubt. David Montgomery ran for 73 yards, Jahmyr Gibbs went for 65 yards and a score, and Amon-Ra St. Brown snared a receiving touchdown for the sixth-straight contest.

Detroit’s defense also held up despite losing safety Brian Branch to a second-quarter ejection for a helmet-to-helmet hit. Aaron Glenn’s unit held Jordan Love to  3-of-12 on third downs and 1-of-4 in the red zone, and the Packers QB tossed a pick-six to Kerby Joseph at the end of the first half.

Houston’s O-Line problem

C.J. Stroud was only 11-of-30 passing for 191 scoreless yards in Houston’s 21-13 defeat to the Jets last Thursday night. After suffering eight sacks in the game, the sophomore QB has now been brought down to the turf 14 times since Week 7. The lone bright spots for the Texans offense were Joe Mixon, who ran for 106 yards and a TD, and Tank Dell, who added six receptions for 126 yards in the loss.

While Stefon Diggs is out for the season, Nico Collins is eligible to return from IR. Before suffering a hamstring injury, the 25-year-old receiver had amassed 567 yards and 3 TDs in less than five games.

Houston vs Detroit

Detroit is a 3.5-point road favorite in Week 10 with the over/under set at a healthy 49.5 points. The Lions have the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL, averaging 32.3 points per game, while Houston’s offense has averaged only 19 PPG over the past three contests.

Dan Campbell’s team has a top-five scoring defense (18.5 PPG allowed) and a top-ten rush rushing D (106.4 YPG allowed). They also just added veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith from the Browns to make up for the loss of Aidan Hutchinson. DeMeco Ryan’s defense has allowed the third-fewest passing yards per game (167.4). But, Aaron Rodgers lit them up for three passing TDs just last week.

Best Bet

Houston is 4-0 at NRG Stadium this season and coming off 10 days rest while the Lions may be in for a letdown after getting up for two divisional games in three weeks. While it’s scary to bet against a juggernaut like Detroit, we’ll take the Texans to cover at home (+3.5) with the UNDER (49.5).
