Aaron Rodgers has won three NFL Most Valuable Player Awards in the past ten seasons- a feat most expect Patrick Mahomes to accomplish over the next decade with the Chiefs.

The 2018 NFL MVP is favored to win the honor again this year, and lead the league in passing yards and passing touchdowns, while the Packers diva quarterback is at +1200, behind Dak Prescott (+650) and Josh Allen (+900).

Let’s take a look at all the 2021 NFL MVP contenders. Here’s also where you can find tips and advice on betting on NFL football games.

NFL MVP history

It’s fair to wonder if the NFL MVP will ever be won by a non-quarterback again. The last guy to do so was Vikings running back Adrian Peterson way back in 2007, and neither Christian McCaffrey (joined 1,000-1,000 club in 2019) or Derrick Henry (rushed for 2,000 yards in 2020) came close to getting enough votes the past two seasons despite putting up incredible numbers.

Another thing to keep in mind is that 10 of the last 11 MVPs quarterbacked teams that earned a first-round bye in the playoffs. While that’s likely to change with only one bye per conference available, this year’s winner will almost surely come from a Super Bowl contending team.

Award favorites

Patrick Mahomes (+575) will likely be the favorite for NFL MVP well into his 40’s and you’ll probably turn a profit betting on him every year at these odds. It’s curious to see Dak Prescott (+650) so close behind considering his recent injury woes. While Dak will put up huge numbers if Dallas’ defense doesn’t improve under new coordinator Dan Quinn, it’s unlikely the Cowboys will be among the league’s best teams if this scenario unfolds.

Josh Allen (+900) and Aaron Rodgers (+1200) should have their clubs in contention for a first-round bye, but Matthew Stafford (+1200) is in a tough NFC West division and Lamar Jackson (+1400) may be hamstrung by the J.K. Dobbins injury and a lack of receiving talent.

MVP best bets

Tom Brady (+1400) threw for 40 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his first year in Bruce Arians’ offense despite COVID wreaking havoc with NFL training camps last season. Tampa Bay is among the favorites to secure the best record in football in 2021 and the 44-year-old has the best collection of pass catchers (Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown, Rob Gronkowski) he’s ever had. Since LeBron James always whines about only having four career NBA MVPs, perhaps football’s GOAT should complain about only having three NFL MVPs.

Baker Mayfield (+1600) threw for 1,259 yards, eight touchdowns and one pick in the final four games of the 2020 season. Finally free of Hue Jackson and Freddie Kitchens, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2018 draft is entering year two in Kevin Stefanski’s offense behind the best offensive line in the NFL. With a dominant run game and a much-improved defense, Cleveland will also be in the mix for the AFC’s No. 1 seed – and that bodes well for Baker.

Kyler Murray (+1800) doesn’t quite fit the MVP profile as his Cardinals are expected to finish fourth in their division, but that also gives the diminutive 24-year-old the chance to exceed expectations. Despite playing through a shoulder injury last year, Kyler tossed 26 TDs and ran for another 11. If he takes another leap forward with Rondale Moore and AJ Green added to the receiving mix, Arizona could win the NFC West.
