NFL Thursday Night Football Picks: Washington Favored Over the Giants

  • BetOnline has made Washington a 3.5-point favorite over the Giants on Thursday Night Football
  • The Giants will be trying to avoid an 0-2 start for the eighth time in nine years
  • Third-year quarterback Daniel Jones has committed 40 turnovers in 28 career games

While no one confused either of this week’s Thursday Night Football participants with Super Bowl odds faborites and contenders heading into the NFL season, the Washington Football Team became a trendy pick to win the NFC East division after signing Ryan Fitzpatrick in the offseason.

With the 38-year-old quarterback now on injured reserve after suffering a hip injury in a 20-16 loss to the Chargers on Sunday, Ron Rivera will turn to backup Taylor Heinicke against the 0-1 New York Giants on Thursday night. Before we look at the opening line on the game, here’s where you can find tips and advice for betting on NFL football games.

Giants vs Washington

Washington is a 3.5-point home favorite against Big Blue on Thursday night despite starting a backup quarterback. While Heinicke is a downgrade on Fitzy, the 28-year-old performed admirably in last year’s Wild-Card round loss to the Buccaneers, throwing for 306 yards and a touchdown. He also completed 11 of 15 passes for 122 yards and a TD in relief of Fitzpatrick on Sunday. And Ron Rivera does not seem in a rush to sign his old friend Cam Newton.

Perhaps of greater concern is the Football Team’s leaky defense. Expected to be the strength of the team, Jack Del Rio’s unit struggled to get off the field all day, allowing sophomore QB Justin Herbert to convert 14 for 19 third downs.

Washington’s defense should have a much easier time against Daniel Jones, He now has 40 turnovers in 28 career games after committing a costly fumble in New York’s dispiriting 27-13 season-opening loss to the Broncos. Saquon Barkley also looked mediocre in his return from an ACL and meniscus tear, compiling 26 yards on 10 carries and 1 yard on one catch.

Like the WFT, the Giants D also struggled to get off the field on Sunday, allowing Denver to convert 7 of 15 third-down conversions and 3 of 3 fourth-down conversions.

Thursday Night Football Best Bets

Bet the UNDER on 41 points. Thirteen of the Giants’ 16 games went under in 2020, including seven of eight road games, and Washington hit their OVER in just two of eight home contests last season. While both teams’ defenses struggled in Week 1, each should find their footing on Thursday night against underwhelming attacks.

Washington to cover -3.5 spread. This feels like a field-goal game, but WFT’s high-octane skill-position players (Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson) inspire much more faith than the still-recovering Saquon Barkley and the overpaid Kenny Golladay.

With another uninspiring offensive performance, Giants OC Jason Garrett could soon find himself on the unemployment line as New York looks for another convenient excuse to justify the poor performance of first-round bust Danny Dimes.

Final Score Prediction: Washington 20, Giants 13.
