2021 NFL Coach of the Year Picks

  • BetOnline‘s 2021 NFL Coach of the Year odds favor new Chargers boss Brandon Staley (+1000)
  • Bill Belichick (+1600) and Kyle Shanahan (+1800) could contend for the award following down years
  • The Vikings’ Mike Zimmer (+3300) is a sneaky bet to win the COY if Aaron Rodgers sits out the season

While your team doesn’t need to win the Super Bowl to be named NFL Coach of the Year, it must exceed expectations. It’s why Bill Belichick hasn’t claimed the honor in a decade despite orchestrating over football’s greatest dynasty, while guys like Matt Nagy, Mike Smith and Marvin Lewis all have awards on their mantles.

Let’s look at the odds for the 2021 National Football League Coach of the Year Award, but before we do, make sure to check out our tips for betting on NFL football games.

Chargers Brandon Staley opens as favorite

Brandon Staley (+1000) is favored to win Coach of the Year in his rookie season on the sidelines. After presiding over the Rams No. 1 ranked defense in 2020, the 38-year-old takes over a Chargers team with Defensive Player of the Year contender Joey Bosa and All-Pro safety Derwin James, who could be a sneaky Comeback Player of the Year candidate if he can avoid injury.

Staley also has the benefit of following Anthony Lynn, who somehow went 7-9 in 2020 while Justin Herbert enjoyed the greatest rookie season in the history of the quarterback position.

Hall-of-Famer Joe Gibbs was the last man to win back-to-back COY awards (1982, 1983) so don’t even think about wagering on Kevin Stefanski at +1200. Past winners Sean McVay (+1400) and Bruce Arians (+1600) can probably also be dismissed because everyone expects the Rams and Buccaneers to be good. Same goes for Bills head coach Sean McDermott (+1800) and Chiefs boss Andy Reid (+1800).

Best longshot bets

Brian Flores (+1400) won 10 games with the Dolphins last year and will likely win the award running the away this season if Miami can make another leap with sophomore QB Tua Tagovailoa. However, the aforementioned Bill Belichick (+1600) might be the better bet after a 7-9 campaign. If a strong defense and beefy offensive line can return the Patriots to prominence in the AFC East, the New England legend will tie Don Shula with his fourth-career Coach of the Year honor.

Coming off an injury-riddled year, the 49ers have the easiest strength of schedule by far in 2021, making Kyle Shanahan a strong bet at +1800, despite the fact San Francisco has only been over .500 in one of his four seasons at the helm.

Ron Rivera (+2200) could win his third-career COY if Washington’s QB play can match the hype the rest of the roster is drawing this offseason. Urban Meyer (+2500) will definitely coach the one-win Jaguars to more victories in 2021, but over the past plus-decade COY winners have needed at least 11 Ws to capture the award.

We think the Vikings can hit that 11-win mark under Mike Zimmer (+3300), who enjoys a solid 66-50-1 record (including playoffs) in seven seasons in Minnesota. If Aaron Rodgers sits out the year or is traded, Zimmer’s Vikes should have a clear path to the NFC North Crown.
