2022 NHL Futures: Who’s Favored To Win Next Year’s Stanley Cup?

  • BetOnline‘s opening 2022 Stanley Cup odds favor the Colorado Avalanche (+500)
  • Oddsmakers put the chances of a Tampa Bay Lightning three-peat at +700
  • The Islanders (+2000) aren’t getting much respect after two straight appearances in the Semifinals

The Tampa Bay Lightning are back-to-back Stanley Cup champions after dominating the Montreal Canadiens throughout most of the final. The good news for the rest of the NHL is that it’s unlikely they’ll be able to circumvent the league’s salary cap yet again and continue their run in 2022.

Avalanche open as favorites again

After compiling the best record in the NHL and winning the President’s Trophy, Colorado (+500) lost in the second round of the playoffs for the third consecutive season. With two superstars in Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, the Avalanche’s future is still bright, but general manager Joe Sakic faces a cap crunch with captain Gabriel Landeskog and netminder Philipp Grubauer hitting unrestricted free agency this summer.

The Golden Knights (+600) are rumored to be sniffing around disgruntled Sabres center Jack Eichel, but that move would force them to trade one of their goalies, 2021 Vezina Trophy winner Marc-Andre Fleury or Robin Lehner.

Oddsmakers put the Lightning‘s chance at a three-peat at +700, and while they’ll almost certainly lose key contributors in free agency, their Cup core of Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Steven Stamkos, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Victor Hedman, and Ryan McDonagh will remain intact.

Set to lose defenseman Dougie Hamilton, the Hurricanes are a poor value at +1100. Boston (+1400) could also be heading in the wrong direction with Tuukka Rask, David Krejci, and Taylor Hall all hitting free agency. And don’t forget the Maple Leafs (+1200), who now have the longest Stanley Cup drought in NHL history at 53 seasons and counting.

Sneaky bets to win Lord Stanley

The Islanders (+2000) still aren’t getting any respect from the oddsmakers after making it to the Cup Semifinals for the second-straight year and forcing Tampa to seven games. New York is tight against the cap with a bunch of UFAs and restricted free agents, but we’re betting on GM Lou Lamoriello to figure it all out.

Sticking in the same state, the Rangers (+2800) are set to get a lot better under new coach Gerard Gallant, and the Philadelphia Flyers (+3300) could be in the mix if their rumored deal for defenseman Seth Jones comes to fruition.

The Dallas Stars (+3300) made the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 before losing Tyler Seguin, Alexander Radulov, and Ben Bishop to injury this season. Assuming they resign defenseman Miro Heiskanen and forward Roope Hintz, both restricted free agents, this club still has the pieces to compete for a championship.
