Sixteen of the National Hockey League’s 32 teams will compete in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Three from each of the NHL’s four divisions (Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central and Pacific) with two wild-card spots in both the Eastern and Western Conference.
Let’s look at what contenders and pretenders will make and miss the postseason this year, with the start of a new hockey season just weeks away. Here’s also where you can find the best Stanley Cup betting sites and the top betting sites for NHL hockey in 2022-23.

Surprise playoff teams
Winnipeg Jets to earn a postseason berth (+170). The news cycle has been all negative in Manitoba after veteran forward Blake Wheeler was stripped of the captaincy earlier this month. However, Rick Bowness deserves the benefit of the doubt given he’s been coaching in the league for almost 40 years. The Jets’ new bench boss led Dallas into the Stanley Cup Finals in 2019-20 and secured playoff spots for the Stars in each of the past two seasons.
Winnipeg also has one of the best tenders in the league in Connor Hellebuyck and tons of talent with Mark Scheifele and Pierre-Luc Dubois at centre ice and Kyle Connor and Nikolaj Ehlers sniping goals from the wing.

Columbus Blue Jackets to make postseason (+400). This is obviously a longshot as Brad Larsen’s club finished 19 points out of a playoff spot in 2021-21. However, the team now has play-making winger Johnny Gaudreau to pair with dynamic sniper Patrik Laine. Ideally, CBJ can trade one of their many wingers for help on the defensive end, with not many quality options after Zach Werenski.
Best bets to miss the postseason
Vegas Golden Knights to miss the playoffs (+250). These are incredible odds considering the franchise failed to make the postseason just last year. While former Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy could help matters, this team has more question marks than Vegas has lap dancers. Goaltender Robin Lehner will miss the season following a hip surgery, captain Mark Stone just had surgery on his back, and center Jack Eichel has done nothing but lose his entire career.
🎥 Eichel: No restrictions this summer. I was able to have more of a normal off-season for myself. It's nice to be healthy. pic.twitter.com/tTdf2S8Caf

New York Islanders (+125) or Washington Capitals (+115) to miss the dance. The depth of the Atlantic division (Tampa Bay, Toronto, Florida, Boston, etc.) means at least one of these Metropolitan clubs will fail to secure a wild-card berth. Washington will be without headhunter Tom Wilson for the first few months of the year following knee surgery. And Nicklas Backstrom will miss even more time than that after offseason hip surgery.
Meanwhile, after finishing 16 points behind the Caps in 2021-22, the only real change on Long Island was the firing of respected hockey man Barry Trotz. On a team with an absence of talent up front, will head coach Lane Lambert really make that much of a difference?
