Betting Favorites
Colorado Avalanche (+400)
The Colorado Avalanche enter the season as the clear-cut favorites to win the 2023 Stanley Cup. Despite losing Nazem Kadri in free agency, Colorado still boasts one of the most star-studded rosters in the league while also having solid depth. Superstar center Nathan MacKinnon will be among the Hart Trophy candidates this season and could eclipse 100 points on the year if he manages to stay healthy. On the defensive end, Cale Makar will look to build off his sensational campaign in 2021-22, during which he broke out as one of the top players in the league.
The Avs should make a deep playoff run in 2022-23, and could very well end up hoisting the Stanley Cup when push comes to shove. The odds (+400), however, reflect their chances and have them favored over the rest of the league. The Avs are the safest bet in terms of 2023 Stanley Cup Futures.
Toronto Maple Leafs (+850)
Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs were once again bounced in the first round last year, adding to an unfortunate streak in Toronto. They’ll look to snap that in 2022-23, and the reigning Hart Trophy winner will have a chip on his shoulder as he’ll be hungry to earn a playoff series win, and more. At (+850) on BetOnline, the Maple Leafs present solid value for one of the teams considered favorites. They have the star power to get the job done in the playoffs and this could be the year the team puts it all together and makes a Stanley Cup run.
Other Favorites
The Tampa Bay Lightning (+1200) have made three Stanley Cups in a row, and could return again this year. While the roster is aging, the talent is still there. The Calgary Flames (+1500) lost two 100-point getters in the offseason (Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk) but restocked by signing Kadri and acquiring Jonathan Huberdeau. They should be right back in the mix for a Stanley Cup if the new-look roster can gel early on. The Edmonton Oilers (+1400) have two of the top stars in hockey in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, and after making a Western Conference Finals run last year, they’ll be eager to push for new heights in 2022-23.
Could Make a Run
New York Rangers (+2000)
With the best goalie in hockey protecting the net in Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers are capable of going up against any team in hockey. Chris Kreider took the league by storm last year with a stunning 52-goal campaign in 2021-22, and Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad both continue to dominate. With Adam Fox and Jacob Trouba on defense, this team is well-equipped on every level. An Eastern Conference Finals trip last year will have the Rangers eager to make another deep run in the playoffs in 2022-23, and they could emerge as dark horses to win the East.
Pittsburgh Penguins (+2200)
Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin are back, which means Sidney Crosby is happy. The window is shutting for the Penguins to win a Cup, and quick, but after long-term deals for their two veterans, it looks like they won’t be entering a rebuild just yet. Expect the Penguins to put up a strong fight towards making a run in the Eastern Conference while they still have some star players in their primes. If all goes well, they could make a surprise Stanley Cup run.
Long Shots
Ottawa Senators (+5000)
Ottawa was one of the most active teams in NHL free agency, bringing in star talents such as Claude Giroux and Alex DeBrincat to pair with an already potent offense that features Tim Stutzle, Brady Tkachuk, and Josh Norris, among others. This is an offense that can rack up goals in a hurry, and they’ll be eager to prove that this season. Despite the acquisitions on offense, Ottawa is still viewed as a major longshot to win the Cup. Their defense leaves plenty to be desired and while they upgraded big time offensively, they’re still a young team that is in all likelihood a few years away from contention.
Dallas Stars (+4500)
The Stars have a handful of talented pieces and appear to have the makings of one of the top goaltenders in all of the NHL in Jake Oettinger. With Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz coming off strong seasons, the Stars will look to make a strong showing in head coach Peter DeBoer’s debut season at the helm. If Dallas wants any shot at competing, they’ll need to see more out of veterans such as Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn, both of whom had underwhelming seasons last year. The books don’t expect the Stars to make a deep run, evidenced by their odds, but they could surprise some people in 2022-23.
While both of these teams, as well as the Nashville Predators (+5000) and Columbus Blue Jackets (+7500) present intriguing longshot options, the likelihood of any of those teams winning a championship in 2022-23 remains slim.
