Edmonton Looking to Return to Winning Ways Post-Break
With yet another defeat in a major final, Connor McDavid is starting to hear the noise from pundits criticizing his inability to get the win when it matters most. Of course, Canada’s runners-up finish comes after the Oilers have lost back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals.
A big question mark looms over this game for the Oilers, however. McDavid’s national duties in Italy could force him to be unavailable on Wednesday. Late reports on Tuesday state he will be flying into Anaheim, but any ice time is up in the air. This marks a strong shift from earlier rumors which suggested McDavid would be out multiple games.
Even if McDavid does suit up, his usefulness may be limited by his tired legs. The Oilers talisman played the maximum games in the Olympics, all of which came in quick succession. To make matters worse, McDavid’s fingers were taped up, suggesting a possible lingering hand injury. He will likely get less minutes than usual if he does play, and I would argue he’s more likely to sit against Anaheim in preparation for their second game in as many nights on Thursday against the Kings.
Unfortunately for the Oilers, McDavid doesn’t represent their only injury concern. Forward Kasperi Kapanen remains unavailable, although he will be replaced by the returning veteran forward Adam Henrique.
Anaheim Ducks Making Late Playoff Push
In a blink of an eye, Anaheim has introduced itself to the playoff race in the West thanks to a 9-2-0 run in the final 11 games heading into the Olympics break. Indeed, the Ducks now sit in the second wild card position via tiebreaker and just one point behind the Oilers, second in the Pacific Division. The Honda Center has not been a welcoming environment for its visitors with nine consecutive sellouts. Anaheim has won its last five games at the arena to boost their home record to 17-8-1 on the year.
Curiously, the Ducks will play every Canadian team on the road in the month of March, making their stretch run for a playoff berth quite challenging. It would be their first appearance in the postseason since 2018, and likely their first season with a winning record in that timeframe. Another milestone is due for the Ducks’ head coach, with Joel Quenneville one win away from his 1000th, which would make him just the second coach to ever reach the millennium mark.
It should be noted the Ducks are in some hot water despite not playing in weeks. That’s because team captain Radko Gudas was caught on a hot mic shouting a gay slur at the Olympics shortly after injuring Canada’s star Sidney Crosby. The Czech player, nor the team or the league, has commented on the situation. This compounds the negative press for the Ducks, who last month were sued by a former employee alleging sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination, including homophobic slurs.
Oilers vs Ducks Prediction: Free Expert Betting Pick
There are a number of factors at play that make this matchup difficult to predict. The long break between games could certainly throw off any form each team was in. Additionally, with the status of Olympics players like McDavid in doubt, it’s hard to know which playmakers we will even see on the ice.
Anaheim begins their return to league play with a seven-game homestand, and yet despite their success at home, they are the underdogs according to top online sportsbooks.
