- Odds: Philadelphia Flyers (+160) vs. Carolina Hurricanes (-185) via Bovada.
- Prediction: Hurricanes to beat the Flyers
The Carolina Hurricanes look to continue their red-hot start to the 2021-22 NHL season when they welcome the Philadelphia Flyers to PNC Arena on Friday.
The Hurricanes opened this season on a perfect 9-0 run. None of those nine games went into overtime. The team picked up its first loss on November 6 when they dropped a 5-2 game to the league leading Florida Panthers. Carolina bounced back from that setback with its first overtime win of the season, beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 on Tuesday.
The Flyers continue to struggle to find their footing in 2021-22. The club (6-3-2) is coming off a 3-0 shutout loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday in Philly.

Flyers vs. Hurricanes Odds
Carolina Hurricane Analysis
The Carolina Hurricanes were one win away from joining the 1993-94 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 2006-07 Buffalo Sabres as the only teams to start the NHL season at 10-0-0 when they faced the Panthers. A 5-2 loss halted the Hurricanes run at 9-0.
Today, at 9-1-1, the Hurricanes are averaging 3.73 goals for per game and 1.91 goals against per game. The team’s goal scoring ranks them third behind Edmonton and Florida. As for the defensive side of the puck, no team other than Carolina is below two goals allowed per game.
The Hurricanes are putting up those numbers as a team. The club’s top scorer is Andrei Svechnikov, who has 15 points (7G, 8A), which is good enough to put him in the top-10 in NHL scoring on the season. To find the team’s second highest point total, one has to go down to No. 35 in NHL scoring. That’s where Sebastian Aho (5G, 7A) sits.
Frederik Andersen has been outstanding in the net for Carolina. He is 9-1 with a .939 save percentage and a 1.74 goals against average. Both numbers place him near the top of the heap in NHL goaltending.
Philadelphia Flyers Analysis
Despite a winning record, the Flyers have not found their groove this season. The team has not won more than two straight games and they have been shutout in two of their three regulation defeats, including their 3-0 loss at home to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.
Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux are leading the team in scoring. Both forwards have scored five goals and seven assists.
The Flyers goals for per game (2.91) puts them in the lower half of the NHL this season, while their goals against of 2.45 is very good. Only four teams have allowed fewer goals than Philly. Unfortunately for the Flyers, the Hurricanes are one of those teams.
MyTopSportsbook’s Picks
Hurricanes to win. The Hurricanes are playing much more complete hockey than the Flyers and so a bet on the money line, while not presenting a fantastic value, seems pretty safe as far as a Carolina victory.
Bet the Under. Carolina has a high-scoring offense. The club has netted over 4 goals in six games this season and I suspect they put the puck in the net at least four times against the Flyers. The real question in this matchup is will the Flyers score, and if so, how many times. Two of Philadelphia’s regulation losses have been shutouts and in the other defeat, the team scored two goals. I think the Hurricanes limit the Flyers to one or fewer goals. With that, I’m taking the under.
