The midpoint of the 2021-22 NHL season is upon us. With that, it’s a fine time to look at the rookie players who are on the hunt for the 2022 Calder Memorial Trophy. The NHL awards the Calder every season to the “player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League”. It should be noted that players who have played fewer than 25 games in a single preceding season are also eligible for the Calder.

Lucas Raymond leads the way
The Detroit Red Wings selected Lucas Raymond with the fourth pick in the 2020 NHL entry draft. Raymond, who doesn’t turn 20 until March, has rewarded the Detroit franchise for their faith in him by leading all NHL rookies in scoring in the 2021-22 NHL season.

Raymond has 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 42 games for the Detroit franchise. The young Swedish player looks like he could be the next big star for the Red Wings. He is third on the team in scoring and playing a respectable 17:59 per game, which is more time on the ice than any other rookie forward.
Trevor Zegras shines in Anaheim
The Anaheim Ducks selected Trevor Zegras with the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NHL draft. Looking for scoring help, the team called Zegras up last season. In the 24 games he played in 2021, Zegras scored 13 points (3G, 10A). With 24 games played last year, the 20-year-old is in the hunt for the best rookie award in 2022.
Zegras is second in rookie scoring this season with 29 points (10G, 19A) and second on the Ducks in scoring.

Zegras is a great playmaker and if Raymond falters, expect Zegras to slide right into the top spot as the favorite to claim the 2022 Calder.
Moritz Seider is a young defenseman to watch
The word on defensemen is they usually take longer to develop into NHL-caliber players. No one told that to Moritz Seider. The Detroit Red Wings picked the German player with the sixth overall pick of the 2019 draft. In 2021, he captured the best defenseman award in the Swedish Hockey League and won those same accolades during the World Championship, where he was also a member of the All-Star team.

Today, Seider, who turns 21 in April, is third in rookie scoring with 26 points (3 G, 23A) and leads all rookies in ice time at 22:29 per game. Despite being a rookie blueliner, Seider leads Detroit D-men in scoring and is second on the team in ice time. He has been a great help on the Detroit power play where he leads the team with 11 assists with the man advantage. Raymond is second in that category with five for the Red Wings.
