Cup Contenders Make Deadline Deals
While the Avalanche (+450) mostly stood pat, a slew of contenders decided to go all-in at the deadline. The defending Cup champions in Tampa Bay (+700) brought in rugged Blue Jackets defenseman David Savard to bolster their blueline, the Maple Leafs (+750) traded for Columbus captain Nick Foligno and the Boston Bruins (+1800) added former NHL MVP Taylor Hall from the slumping Sabres.
The New York Islanders (+1200) acquired veteran forward Kyle Palmieri, the Pittsburgh Penguins (+2400) brought in two-time Cup winner Jeff Carter from the Kings and the Washington Capitals (+1600) beat the buzzer with a last-minute deal for Red Wings forward Anthony Mantha.

Which Trades Moved The Needle?
The Lightning (+700) continued to push their chips in the middle of the table with the addition of Savard and will likely get former MVP Nikita Kucherov back in the lineup for the playoffs. Even better, their primary competition in the Central, the Carolina Hurricanes (+1200) did nothing to improve.
Looking to squeeze one last drop of juice out of a core that’s reached the Cup Final three times since 2011, Boston (+1800) gave itself a fighting chance with a low-cost acquisition of Hall, but a rash of injuries could cause them to miss the playoffs entirely if the Rangers (+7000) continue their surge.

Without a playoff series win since 2004, Toronto (+750) is a strong bet due to the sorry state of competition in the North. With the rosters of the Jets (+2600), Oilers (+2500) and Canadiens (+2800) all not constructed to play the kind of tight-checking hockey that has doomed the Leafs in the past, Auston Matthews and company should cruise to the Eastern Conference Finals, at minimum.
After only making a minor move, the Vegas Golden Knights (+800) seem to think they’re ready for a likely second-round clash with Colorado (+450), but the 2019 champs in St. Louis (+4000) could also mount another unlikely Cup run.
