While the the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is still ongoing, it’s never too early to predict which NHL star will win the Conn Smythe Trophy. One wrinkle to keep in mind is that unlike the NBA Finals MVP, which only takes into account the player’s performance in the championship series, hockey’s Most Valuable Player award is for the entirety of the postseason.

Nathan Mackinnon favored
With 13 points in Colorado’s first six games, Nathan Mackinnon (+275) is the Conn Smythe favorite today but be sure to check the latest odds on BetOnline or Bovada as they shift nightly, with every win and loss. If you like the Avalanche to win their first Cup in two decades, also consider Mikko Rantanen (+2500) who’s available at much longer odds despite having just two fewer points than his teammate.
Colorado netminder Philipp Grubauer (+2200) has the second-best save percentage (.929) among starting goalies still in the playoffs, behind only the .935 mark of Habs tender Carey Price (+1000).

If you believe the Golden Knights will eliminate the Avs, Marc-Andre Fleury (+600) has the shortest odds on his squad. The 36 year-old was leading the playoffs in goals-against average (1.79) heading into Tuesday night’s action. More importantly, his team’s leading scorer only has nine points, so Fleury would likely win the MVP by default if Vegas hoists Lord Stanley.
Multiple Lightning Strikes
Victor Hedman (+1800) won the 2020 Conn Smythe Trophy by the slimmest of margins, receiving just one more first-place vote than Lightning teammate Brayden Point (+1600), whose 33 points put him just behind the 34 put up by Nikita Kucherov (+750).
What makes it so difficult to wager on anyone on Tampa Bay winning the NHL’s playoff MVP is that we still haven’t mentioned Andrei Vasilevskiy (+400) or Steven Stamkos (+2200). The Bolts goalie recorded his second shutout of the 2021 postseason on Tuesday night in eliminating the Hurricanes in five games, and “Stammer” sits third in playoff scoring with 5 goals and 8 assists through 10 games.

Semyon Varlamov (+1600) has the shortest odds among Islanders players, but if you think New York will finish off the Bruins and take out the Lightning in the Stanley Cup Semifinals, strongly consider Mathew Barzal at +8000. The 24-year-old center has scored in three straight games to put Boston on the brink.
Brad Marchand (+2800) has 10 points in 10 games, but defenseman Charlie McAvoy could just as easily win the award if the B’s rally and hoist another Cup.
All that said, Brayden Point is our pick to claim the 2021 Conn Smythe for NHL playoff MVP. With 21 goals and 21 assists over the past two postseasons (31 games), voters will award the 25-year-old for his role in leading the Lightning to back-to-back Cups.
