Both clubs conquered adversity

The Canadiens (+395) overcame a 3-1 series deficit to beat Toronto before sweeping the Winnipeg Jets in the second round, while the Golden Knights (-500) were down 2-0 in their series to Colorado, including an embarrassing 7-1 loss in Game 1, before winning four straight to advance to the third round of the playoffs for the third time in four years.

Montreal is on a seven-game win streak and haven’t trailed in over 435 minutes of play. They have only allowed 24 goals in 11 games, the fewest of the four remaining teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and their penalty kill is No. 1 in the playoffs at 90.3 percent (28-for-31).

Habs goaltender Carey Price is leading the playoffs with a .935 save percentage, going 8-3 with a 1.97 goals-against average and one shutout, however, Vegas also has a Conn Smythe contender of their own between the pipes. After going to Vegas in the 2017 expansion draft after the Penguins left him unprotected, Marc-Andre Fleury is still on top of his game.

At age 36, he earned the first Vezina nomination of his career this season and is looking for a fourth Cup ring. He ranks  ranks fourth all-time in playoff wins with 89 and beating his hometown team in Montreal would have to be extra sweet.

Series Prediction

Montreal is Canada’s last hope to win its first Stanley Cup since 1993. Their tight-checking, grind-it-out style will make it difficult for the Knights, who defeated a similar team, the Minnesota Wild, in seven games in the first round.

Outside of the goaltending matchup, perhaps the best storyline of the series is former Habs captain Max Pacioretty playing Montreal three years after his trade to Vegas. Pacioretty scored three times in six games vs. Colorado, and had two game-winners, so safe to say he’ll be ready for this one.

There is nothing more unpredictable in sports than the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but it’s difficult to see Vegas dropping this series to Montreal. Looking to return to the Cup Final after losing to Washington in five games in 2018, the Golden Knights are the far more talented, deeper club.

We like the Knights to win in 5 games at +240 at BetOnline.
