NHL Vezina Trophy Odds: Vasilevskiy And Hellebuyck Favored

  • Go to BetOnline for the latest Vezina Trophy odds and NHL award futures for the Norris, Hart, Calder and more
  • Montreal’s Carey Price (+1200) could become the first over-30 goalie to win the award in a decade
  • Philadelphia’s Carter Hart (+1400) and Ilya Samsonov (+2000) of the Capitals offer incredible value given their youth, opportunity and 2020 performance

Vezina Trophy winners usually fall into one of two categories: Goalies who backstop dominant teams, like 2019 victor Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and netminders who are given full credit for keeping their mediocre squads in playoff contention, such as the Winnipeg Jets’ Connor Hellebuyck last year.

It just so happens that Vasilevskiy (+600) and Hellebuyck (+650) are the two favorites to be named the NHL’s best goalie again this year. After looking at the latest Vezina odds, we’ll recommend a few tenders to bet big on this season.

THE FAVORITES

Andrei Vasilevskiy (+650) has placed in the top-three of Vezina voting the past three seasons, pacing the league in wins in each of those years. With NHL realignment moving Tampa Bay to a make-shift Central Division they should have no trouble dominating, expect the 26-year-old Russian to once again lead the league in victories.

For that reason alone, he’s a better bet than Hellebuyck (+650), who plays on a Jets club that ranked 29th in the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes at five-on-five. Winnipeg’s porous defense will once again give the 27-year-old Michigan native a chance to shine, but there’s not much room for error when you face the most high-danger shots in the league (a whopping 412 in 2020). In addition, no goalie has won consecutive Vezinas since Martin Brodeur went back-to-back in 2007 and 2008.

BEST LONGSHOT BETS

At 33 years old, Habs netminder Carey Price (+1200) would be the oldest Vezina winner since Tim Thomas in 2011, but aging legends have gotten it done between the pipes in the recent past. The aforementioned Bruin was named the NHL’s best goalie twice after his 30th birthday, Martin Brodeur won four in his 30s, and Dominik Hasek claimed five.

While Price may not be in the same stratosphere as Brodeur and Hasek, he has been stuck on miserable Montreal teams for the majority of his career. Now on a young Canadiens squad on the rise, the Olympic gold medalist is poised for a vintage season. After all, we know he still has the goods. Last season, Price posted a 1.78 GAA, .936 save percentage and two shutouts in 10 playoff games.

If you’re an ageist, the Flyers’ Carter Hart (+1400) might be more your speed. In last year’s postseason, the 22-year-old went 9-5 with a 2.23 GAA and .926 save percentage, taking his game up a level from a solid sophomore campaign where he maintained a .914 save percentage. Given that Vezina voting has been biased towards wins recently (winners have averaged 41 victories over the past six years), Hart is a smart bet on a Philadelphia team with the sixth-best odds (+1600) of winning the Stanley Cup (Bovada).

Washington’s Ilya Samsonov (+2000) is also a sneaky wager considering that his expected net partner Henrik Lundqvist will miss the year after undergoing open-heart surgery. In his debut season between the pipes in Washington, the 23-year-old compiled a 16-6-2 record with a .913 save percentage and 2.55 goals against average.
