Panthers Favored to Clinch Stanley Cup Final in Game 6

The Edmonton Oilers find themselves in a familiar situation Tuesday night as they look to force a game 7. Last year, the Oilers managed to force a winner-take-all match after falling down 3-0 in the Stanley Cup Final against Florida. Now the work is half as much, but bookmakers believe the Panthers are favorites to hoist the trophy in Sunrise. Read on for an expert Stanley Cup prediction for Game 6 and read tips on who’s going to win the Stanley Cup.

Stanley Cup Prediction: Oilers vs Panthers Betting Odds

The Panthers are favored to the tune of (-145), a similar price to what they have been in home games this series. As underdogs, an Edmonton Oilers moneyline bet pays out at (+130). The total is set yet again at 6.5, a number that has been eclipsed in every game of this series.

Panthers One Win Away from Back-to-Back Championships

Game 5 was a grueling affair between two sides that looked physically exhausted from top to bottom of the roster. Just one day separated from game 4, it appeared that a long postseason and little rest had major impacts. Now with an extra rest day in hand, game 6 should see some more spritely legs out on the ice.

Brad Marchand has been a knight in shining armor for Florida, scoring 6 goals this series. That makes him the first player since 1988 to score at least 6 in the Stanley Cup Final. And doing it all at the ripe old age of 37, with a new team, is all the more impressive.

Having Sergei Bobrovsky in front of the net is truly a luxury for Florida. The longtime goaltender, considered by many as one of the best of his generation, has held Edmonton to two goals or less in two of the last three games. They will lean on the veteran heavily to clinch this series, with past opportunities to wrap things up this postseason not going so smoothly.

Toronto forced a game 7 in the first round against Florida with a 2-0 win. Additionally, the Hurricanes won game 4 in the Eastern Conference finals after dropping the first three of the series. Florida managed to win both of those series, but those slip-ups provide crucial background information heading into game 6 as bettors make their Stanley Cup prediction.

Can the Oilers Channel Last Year’s Must-Win Magic?

There is a looming decision ahead of Tuesday’s clash, however. Edmonton’s head coach Kris Knoblauch has not yet decided on who will start as goalie between Calvin Pickard and Stuart Skinner. Skinner struggled in the first four games, lending to Pickard’s first start of the series. He allowed four goals off 18 shots, losing for the first time this postseason.

Pickard was 7-0 in this playoff run heading into Game 5, and Knoblauch defended his performance. The coach stated “there’s nothing saying it was a poor performance,” noting difficult situations on breakaways and shots through screens leading to “Picks” having a tough night. It wasn’t a big surprise when Pickard got the nod, as he helped the Oilers to a dramatic game 4 comeback overtime victory after Skinner allowed three goals in the first period.

As for the offensive side of things, Connor McDavid finally scored his first goal of the series. Widely lauded as the best hockey player in the world, McDavid has received a fair amount of criticism for his performance in the Final to date.

A win in Florida would suddenly flip the script, as the Stanley Cup Final would come down to a game in Rogers Place. Last season, Florida won game 7 on home ice, lending to a beautiful narrative if Edmonton can pull off the upset on the road on Tuesday. History suggests the Panthers could have trouble clinching the title in Florida also, as the team is 5-4 in Sunrise this postseason.

Stanley Cup Prediction: Oilers vs Panthers Betting Pick

While typically I look to back unders late in playoff series, especially in the Stanley Cup, the wavering confidence of Edmonton’s goaltending pair has me skeptical. Both goaltenders seem to have lost their mojo, including the newcomer Pickard. With everything on the line, the Oilers will be more willing to throw bodies forward and take risks, which could lead to early breakaways for Florida.

From a betting perspective, I agree with the movement of the market here. Florida opened as (-135) favorites but continued to take sharp money. Now as high as (-150) on some books, the Panthers appear to be “the side.” They certainly have the momentum, and as we have seen in past playoff series, teams with the opportunity to clinch the series victory at home tend to get a boost in win probability according to bookmakers. I doubt the line moves up any higher than (-155), but I only see it going in one direction.

Take advantage of early lines and grab (-145) before it’s too late; every cent counts. My Stanley Cup prediction: Trust in Florida to win their second straight Stanley Cup against the Oilers in a game that could get out of hand quickly.
