The Oilers have received a bit of a discount after winning Game 1 of the series, largely due to the “must-win” situation Florida faces. After conceding the first goal of the series to Edmonton’s Leon Draisatl, Florida ran off 3 straight goals to take a 3-1 lead in the second period. One of those was a controversial deflection of Sam Bennett. The Panthers star awkwardly fell in between an Edmonton defender and goalie Stuart Skinner as a shot hit his side and into the net. A failed Edmonton challenge maintained the official’s on-ice ruling, much to the chagrin of Edmonton faithful occupying Rogers Place.
The video replay confirmed that defenseman Brett Kulak was to blame for Bennett’s slip, which forced goalie Stuart Skinner away from the puck. But with Edmonton claiming vindication with a 4-3 victory, such a controversy will likely go by the wayside.
Trade deadline acquisition Brad Marchand showcased his fortitude on the grand stage with a goal in the first period on a power play. The former 2011 Stanley Cup winner arrived in Sunrise, Florida after a contract extension stalemate with Boston. Rumors suggest Marchand could return to Boston this summer after his current deal expires.
Sam Bennett admitted to reporters Florida “let up” and “[sat] back” after earning a 3-1 lead. The rare Florida collapse puts pressure on the side to improve upon their already strong 8-3 road mark this postseason. The comeback in the second round series against Toronto bolstered their road record. Interestingly, Florida managed to win that series in 7 games after losing the first two games.
Edmonton Oilers Seek Revenge After Heartbreaking 2024 Loss
It took 19.5 minutes of overtime and a power play, but the Edmonton Oilers completed a 2-goal comeback to defeat the Panthers on home ice this Wednesday. Draisatl struck the final blow to give Edmonton the lead in a Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1990. Last year’s Edmonton side had to fight back from a 3-0 deficit to force a game 7. So, this situation is altogether new in the back-to-back Stanley Cup series so far.
The comeback marked the 41st multi-goal edition in Stanley Cup Final history and the third for Edmonton in their playoff run alone. The Oilers also broke a marvelous record for Florida coach Paul Maurice. Under his tutelage, Florida had never lost a postseason game in which they were leading after the first or second period (31-0). Whether Florida hit the brakes or Edmonton pushed the gas pedal (or both), it was one-way traffic in the final third period and beyond. Edmonton outshot Florida 14-2 (!) in the third period and 10-6 in overtime.
The 2-goal performance for Draisatl is significant as the All-Star was criticized for his scoreless series against Florida last season. A whopping 46 shots on goal for Edmonton will be difficult to replicate again, especially if Game 2 ends in regulation. But that consistent offensive output in the third period is what left Florida on the backfoot for the rest of the game. Florida could not trap Edmonton with their lethal forecheck on the other end of the ice without the puck.
Stanley Cup Prediction: Panthers vs Oilers Betting Pick
The total moved up a half-goal in response to the 7-goal thriller. But had the match not gone to overtime, the total would have sat at 6. As these teams get to know each other, scoring should see a decrease.
Defenses will adjust to tactics and combat opposing teams’ strengths. Additionally, fatigue will set in as they place critical games with just one day of rest in between. To top it off, the series progression will also make each game all the more important, tightening the margins of error and forcing more conservative decision-making.
My projections indicate a total of 6.5 between these two sides should be lined at (-153), yet we are now seeing numbers as low as (-120). And considering the overwhelming historical profitability of betting unders in the NHL playoffs, I have to stick with my guns here and back another under. Go with under 6.5 goals at (-120) at Bovada.
