Can Craig Berube deliver The Holy Grail to Toronto after half a century of misery?

  • After over 50 years without a Stanley Cup win, the Toronto Maple Leafs are in the running to land the big one in 2025
  • Craig Berube is in his first season in charge of Toronto and has brought renewed belief that this could finally be the year.
  • As well as being in the running to win the Stanley Cup, Toronto is also embroiled in a three-way battle to win the 2024/25 Atlantic Division with the Panthers and the Lightning.

When we think of the NHL, one of the first team names that springs to mind is the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The legendary Canadian franchise is a well-known brand across the globe, but casual ice hockey fans may be stunned to know that the Maple Leafs haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967.

After five years as head coach, Sheldon Keefe was fired last May after Toronto lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Boston Bruins. It was the third time in four years that Keefe fell at the first hurdle in the postseason.

Into Keefe’s position stepped Craig Berube. The former St. Louis Blues head coach knows how to win the Stanley Cup, he did it when in charge of the Blues in 2019.

The Maple Leafs’ hierarchy will be hoping that the additional knowledge and experience Berube brings could result in a first Stanley Cup win in over half a century.

Betting to win the 2025 Stanley Cup

The Toronto Maple Leafs aren’t the betting favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Their Atlantic Division rivals and current holders, the Florida Panthers, lead the betting at +550.

The in-form Dallas Stars are the team that is contesting the tag of favorites with the Panthers. The Stars are currently +600, but they have been the joint favorites over the past few days.

Toronto find themselves ninth in the betting at +1300, just ahead of another Atlantic Division rival, the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Maple Leafs have been inside the top four betting favorites on occasions this season. They are outside of the leading teams at the moment, but they are certainly one of the franchises in the mix to win the 2025 Stanley Cup.

Betting to win the Eastern Conference

As well as leading the betting to win the Stanley Cup, the Florida Panthers are also the betting favorites to win the Eastern Conference.

Florida is +300. Their closest rivals are the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes of the Metropolitan Division. The Capitals are +400, with the Hurricanes next at +500.

Toronto is the fourth betting favorite at +600. The only other team given much of a chance by the best NHL betting sites is the Lightning at +750. The Ottawa Senators are the best of the rest at +1800.

Betting to win the Atlantic Division

This is where the most exciting battle of the season is taking place. Three teams are all in with a great chance of winning the Atlantic Division.

The top NHL online betting sites are not surprisingly going with the Florida Panthers. The Panthers are -145, which considering they are only two points ahead of the Maple Leafs, looks a bit short.

Toronto also holds a game in hand over Florida. The Maple Leafs are the second favorite at +190. The Tampa Bay Lightning are +500. They are the only other team with a shout of winning the division.

The Panthers started the season as the +210 betting favorites. Toronto was second in the betting at +220 and Tampa Bay was +375.

The Bruins were also regarded as a team with a chance. They started the season as the fourth favorite at +450.

Boston is the only one of the four that is out of the running. They are now seventh in the betting at +500000.

Our best bets

With barely anything between the three teams at the top of the Atlantic Division, a bet on the Tampa Bay Lightning at +500 looks by far the best value wager.

The bookmakers are clearly basing their odds on the belief that the Florida Panthers are the best team. True as that may be, it doesn’t mean that Paul Maurice’s team is certain to win the division.

The Panther’s long-term focus will be the Stanley Cup. And if you just look at the games played and compare them to the odds on offer, it would be a risky bet to back Florida to top the division at odds on.

As things stand, we would overlook both the Panthers and the Maple Leafs, and back the Lightning at +500 to win the Atlantic Division.

Can Toronto win the Stanley Cup? We’re not too sure. But with Craig Berube in charge and at odds of +1300, they may be worth a small wager.

Alternatively, the Maple Leafs don’t look a bad bet to win the Eastern Conference at +600.
