Minnesota Wild on a Tear in February

February has been kind to Minnesota as the Wild have run up an 8-1-1 record in their last 10 games. A high-octane offense is to credit for the upsurge. Their total of 196 goals places them only behind a handful of teams in the league in the scoring category. Minnesota entered the Olympics break with a 5-game winning run. They will look to make that six on Thursday night in Colorado.

Trocheck Headed to Minnesota?

As the playoffs loom, the Wild find themselves firmly entrenched in the postseason picture with 78 points, good for 3rd in the Central Division. And it appears the hockey club is well aware of their sanguine situation. Additionally, rumors have it Wild GM Bill Guerin is working the phones 24/7 to bolster the team’s roster before the trade deadline. In fact, a deal for the Rangers’ Vincent Trocheck seems imminent. The middle-six player found himself on the block as New York looks to clear cap space during a down year.

With the addition of Trocheck, the Wild look set to contend for a Stanley Cup. His 55% faceoff win rate and playmaking ability make him the perfect candidate to plug and play into this roster against any team’s top lines. In fact, we have seen many eventual champions make big moves like this in February. So don’t be surprised if you see Trocheck and the Wild still playing in June.

In other related news, Guerin is under fire for inviting FBI Director Kash Patel into the locker of the men’s Olympic hockey team. It is that same Patel who is accused of covering up recent events in Minnesota, constituting a tough PR hit for the GM and the team. The Olympics team itself is also under fire for their positive reaction to a joke from the President suggesting he was reluctant to invite the women’s team to the White House.

Utah Mammoth Could Earn First-Ever Playoff Berth

Utah shares their most recent opponent with Minnesota, as the Mammoth hosted the Avalanche on Wednesday. All the goalmouth action occurred in the second period as Colorado took all 3 points in a 4-2 victory. The Mammoth will stick around in their home city to host the Blackhawks on Sunday. After that, they will jet off for a 5-game road trip.

The Mammoth have started off the new year on a 12-5 run and are now optimistic of earning a playoff berth in the club’s second year. Their home form has been the source of most of their points production, with the club going 17-8-1 at the Delta Center. Statistical projections place the team’s chances of making into the final bracket at 82%. Moreover, there is a 59% chance of ending up with the first wild-card spot.

However, any optimism can be muffled by previous letdowns by the club’s predecessors. Any carryover fans from their Arizona Coyotes days will remember how often the club flirted with postseason contention before ultimately falling short. The Mammoth, like the Wild, may need to add some reinforcements to support this stretch run. It already helps that Utah will receive an injury boost. Logan Cooley is set to return to the lineup for the first time in 28 games.

Utah Mammoth vs Minnesota Wild Prediction: Free Expert Betting Pick

This will be the second night of a back-to-back for the Minnesota Wild after their game with Colorado on Thursday night. Utah has historically dominated this matchup, winning their last four meetings 6-2, 6-1, 4-0 and 2-1. But the Wild have a ton of momentum in the league. And from a betting perspective, the Wild are 14-9 as underdogs, including 18-5 on the puckline.

With competing factors of form, fatigue and familiarity, it’s too difficult to pick a side here. Instead, I’m going to recommend a play in the total goals market. Utah’s defense ranks 5th in the league in goals allowed and the Wild will be skating on tired legs. But their strong run of play and performance as underdogs should remain close. I’ll take the flat under 6 goals here in what should be a tight, low-scoring game.
