  • BetOnline has Andrei Vasilevskiy (+300) as the heavy favorite to win the 2022 Vezina Trophy

  • Former Vezina finalist Robin Lehner (+1400) has a golden opportunity as Vegas’ new starting goaltender

Another Vezina for Vasy?

Vasilevskiy (+300) leads all NHL goalies with 105 total wins over the past three seasons, including a league-leading 31 last year, but lost the Vezina to Marc-Andre Fleury in a close vote in 2021. This of course became a topic of conversation in Nikita Kucherov’s epic postgame news conference after the Lightning sealed the 2021 Stanley Cup Final over the Canadiens with a 1-0 Game 5 shutout win.

“Vasy was outstanding. MVP,” said a shirtless Kucherov. “I was telling him every day, Vasy MVP. You’re the best player. And they give it to whatever the guy in Vegas, the Vezina. And last year, they gave Vezina to somebody else. No. 1 bullshit. No. 1 bullshit.”

Next on the board are Connor Hellebuyck (+1000), who claimed the Vezina in the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 campaign, and new Chicago Blackhawk Marc-Andre Fleury (+1200). The Seattle Kraken’s Philipp Grubauer and Carey Price are also listed at +1200, but all four of these netminders may find it difficult to rack up victories playing for mediocre teams on the playoff bubble.

Semyon Varlamov (+1200) was impressive in the Islanders run to the Eastern Conference Final last spring, and bested all the goalies mentioned above with a .929 save percentage in the 2021 regular season. He’s a strong bet.

Vezina darkhorses

Robin Lehner (+1400) has the Vegas net all to himself after Fleury was jettisoned to Chicago. The 30-year-old Swede will be playing behind one of the best defensive corps in the NHL (Alex Pietrangelo, Shea Theodore, Alec Martinez) for one of the league’s top teams.

He was also a Vezina finalist with the Islanders in 2018-19 after going 25-13-5 with a 2.13 goals-against average, .930 save percentage and six shutouts.

Spencer Knight is not even on the board at BetOnline or Bovada, but it might be worth putting in a request. Florida turned to its 20-year-old rookie in a must-win Game 5 against the Lightning in round one of the postseason and he delivered with 36 saves, becoming the youngest goaltender in NHL history to win his playoff debut.

While Knight will have to share the net with fast-decaying Russian Sergei Bobrovsky, the No. 13 overall pick in 2019 will almost certainly win the starting job by year’s end. If you can find long odds, bet on the American netminder to become the poster boy of a young Panthers team on the rise.
