Nathan Chen (USA) | -260 | -260 | -260 |
Yuzuru Hanyu (JAPAN) | +285 | +285 | +285 |
Yuma Kagiyama (JAPAN) | +1100 | +1100 | +1100 |
Shoma Uno (JAPAN) | +1400 | +1400 | +1400 |
The Number One Contender: Nathan Chen, USA (Odds: -260)
A three-time world champion (2018, 2019, and 2021), Chen is seeking his first-ever Olympic gold medal in Beijing. The 22-year old is an extremely accomplished technical athlete and is the first skater to have landed five types of quadruple jumps in competition. This includes the toe loop, Salchow, loop, flip, and the Lutz. What’s more impressive about Chen is his recent streak of dominance since his fifth-place finish at the 2018 Winter Games. Since that competition, Chen had been undefeated in each figure skating event he had entered until October 2021.
Number Two: Yuzuru Hanyu, Japan (Odds: +285)
The reigning Olympic champion, Hanyu is another highly-accomplished skater looking to make history in 2022. In the history of the Winter Olympics, only one athlete, Sweden’s Gillis Grafström, has ever won the men’s singles titles three times, but this occurred from 1920-1928. Hanyu could perhaps be the person to break this streak given his long track record of success at a young age. In international competitions over the course of his career, Hanyu has taken home an astounding 12 gold medals, including wins at the World Championships and the Grand Prix Final.
Number three: Yuma Kagiyama, Japan (Odds: +1100)
Recognized as the youngest athlete on this list, Kagiyama could be the next face of men’s figure skating if things break his way in Beijing. The 18-year old is the 2020 Youth Olympic champion and is coming off a silver medal performance at the 2021 World Championships. In fact, Kagiyama has had a strong string of recent successes. In addition to his 2021 World Championship silver medal, he also won a bronze at the 2020 Four Continents competition and is a three-time Japanese national bronze medalist (2019-20, 2020-21, and 2021-22). While Kagiyama does have the edge of youthful energy on his side, this will be the biggest stage he has ever competed on.
Final contender: Shoma Uno, Japan (Odds: +1400)
A familiar favorite, Uno is another strong medalist but will be looking to finally get over the gold medal hump in Beijing. The 2018 Olympic silver medalist, a two-time World silver medalist (2017 and 2018), and the 2019 Four Continents Champion, Uno has been a consistent presence on the podium but he has never quite broken through to the top on a consistent basis. This could change though in 2022 as he is extremely talented and able to pull off big maneuvers at any given time, as evidenced by him being the first skater to successfully land a quadruple flip in an international competition.
Prediction: A star-studded affair, the men’s figure skating competition will feature a lot of high-flying action and also a new champion. Look for Nathan Chen to continue his streak of dominance and capture his first Olympic gold medal.
