Following the retirement of the 2018 Olympic champions, Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany, there is a void at the top of the Olympic figure skating pairs leaderboard. In their absence are a trio of Russian pairs and a duo from China looking to take their place. Below, the MTS team breaks down each team and what their chances are of snaring the gold medal later this week.

No. 1 Contender: Anastasia Mishina / Aleksandr Galliamov (ROC) (Odds: +150)
An extremely dominant pair, Mishina, and Galliamov are already the 2022 Olympic champions in the team event and the 2021 world champions. A very young duo, Mishina, and Galliamov won the gold medal in their World Championship debut and, in the process, became the second-youngest pair to win the world title. The pair also won the 2022 European Championship in Tallinn and were part of a Russian squad that won the 2021 World Team Trophy in Osaka. A high-flying pair, the two Russians are on an incredible hot streak to start their Olympics career.
Second Contender: Sui Wenjing / Han Cong (CHI)
(Odds: +175)
The 2018 Olympic silver medalists, Sui and Han are another amazing duo that has their sights set on their first taste of Olympic gold. The pair have landed the top spot on the podium before at major competitions with world championships victories in 2017 and 2019 and are six-time Four Continents champions (2012, 2014, 2016-17, 2019-20). Sui and Han also have won the silver medal at the World Figure Skating Championships in 2015, 2016, and most recently, in 2021. So you can definitely expect these two to make a push for the top of the podium, but it will be interesting to see if they can land the top spot.
Third Contender: Evgenia Tarasova / Vladimir Morozov (ROC)

The second Russian duo on our list, Tarasova and Morozov is a veteran pair that have the top-end capability to challenge for a top finish. The duo is three-time Russian national champions (2018, 2019, and 2021) and has been paired together since the spring of 2012. Over the last couple of seasons, Tarasova and Morozov medaled at a handful of major competitions like the World Championships in 2017 (bronze), 2018 (silver), and 2019 (silver). Recently, the duo won the silver medal at the 2022 European Championships and was part of the silver medal-winning Russian squad for the team figure skating event.
Final Contender Spotlight: Aleksandra Boikova / Dmitrii Kozlovskii (ROC) (Odds: +450)
Our final contenders on this list, Boikova and Kozlovskii are wildcards in this competition. A younger duo like our frontrunners, the Russian pair are no strangers to the world figure skating stage. They won the gold at the 2020 European Championships and finished as the bronze medalists at the 2021 World Championships. The duo also won gold at the 2020 Russian Figure Skating competition among an especially crowded field. After a bronze medal finish at the 2022 European Championships, they do have some ground to make up in these Olympic Games.
Prediction: A very top-heavy field, expect this competition to come down to our final two contenders. While this is an especially heavy Russian field, look for the Chinese pair of Sui and Han to take home their first-ever Olympic gold medals.
