Entering the men’s tournament at the Summer Games – the story is all about Novak Djokovic. As great – maybe the greatest ever – as Djokovic is, his shortcomings at previous Olympics mean he is not the only player with a chance at winning the Gold.

Novak Djokovic’s Quest for the Golden Slam Continues

One of the biggest storylines – not just in the tennis tournament, but the entire Olympics – is Novak Djokovic and his quest for the Golden Slam. After winning Wimbledon, Djokovic only needs to win the Gold Medal and the 2021 U.S Open to become the first male to accomplish the feat.

Djokovic enters the tournament as the number one seed and favourite to win the Gold Medal. Djokovic has been unstoppable since he had to withdraw from the 2020 U.S. Open.

With some of the best players – including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and now Matteo Berrettini – withdrawing from the Summer Games, the path to a Gold Medal and the illustrious Golden Slam is easier than expected for the world’s best tennis player.

Daniil Medvedev won at Ariake Coliseum in 2018

The biggest challenge for Novak Djokovic at the 2020 Summer Games is world no. 2 Daniil Medvedev. The 6’ 6” giant has had recent success in Japan – winning the Japanese Open in 2018. In that year, he led the ATP Tour with 38 wins on hard courts (the surface of the 2020 Summer Games).

Medvedev is one of the few players in the world to have success against Djokovic in the last few tennis seasons. Since losing his first two meetings (both in 2017), Medvedev is 3-3 against Djokovic, including two wins on hard courts.

The draw should put these two on a path to meet in the Finals – where, if anyone at the 2020 Summer Games is going to beat Djokovic, it is Medvedev.

Andy Murray at his Best at the Summer Games

At +4000 tennis betting odds to win the Gold Medal, Andy Murray is the best longshot in the men’s singles tennis tournament. Murray won Gold in 2012 and 2016 – making him one of the most accomplished players in the Olympics’ history.

Murray also has success in Japan – winning the 2011 Japan Open at Ariake Stadium. If the draw is favourable, and Djokovic slips up at the Olympics again, Murray pulling in another Gold Medal would not be a shocker.

The Return of Naomi Osaka

Naomi Osaka has spent some time away from tennis – withdrawing from Wimbledon and the French Open – but now looks ready to represent Japan at the 2020 Summer Games. Some Americans criticized her decision to represent Japan over the United States – which should only give her more desire to return to the court in top form to prove she is one of the best players in the world.

Osaka is at her best on hard court – including when playing in Japan. All seven of her career WTA wins have come on hard courts. When playing in Japan – she has reached the Pan Pacific Open Finals (which takes place at Ariake Coliseum) three times, winning once. Expect Osaka to be sharp, rested, and ready to win the Gold Medal.

Karolina Pliskova – One of the Few to Beat Osaka in Japan

In 2018 – the Pan Pacific Open Finals featured a showdown between Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova. Pliskova won the match in consecutive sets 6-4, 6-4. The two went on to split their next two meetings, and Pliskova holds a 3-2 advantage all-time

Pliskova is also a talented player on hard courts. While she showed off her skills on grass by reaching the 2021 Wimbledon Finals – 19 of her 31 career WTA finals (at any level) have come on hard courts. At the +1400, Pliskova is one of the players – in a field thinned after Serena Williams, and Bianca Andreescu withdrew – we can see beating Osaka (or Ash Barty, the other favourite at +450).
