We’ll be upfront and say this is our de facto championship game. If you read our predictions article before group play began, you know we picked both Sweden and Great Britain as our gold-medal betting picks. Little did we know the two would collide now and we’d have to choose between the two.
When evaluating our semis pick, you have to start with their previous meeting in the round-robin stage. It ended in a lopsided 8-2 win for Great Britain — the worst of two defeats for Sweden in this stage of play (the other was by three points against China). To no surprise, Eve Muirhead was instrumental in that previous game, getting a crucial takeout that helped spot Great Britain a four-point lead early on.
Britain is the ultimate “play to the level of your competition” team. They snuck into the semis with four losses but went 2-1 against the other semi-finalists. When the pressure is on, Britain answers the call, which is our expectation against Sweden, the all-time winningest country in this event. We’re betting on the underdogs to win, though, this game should be more competitive than the round-robin matchup.

Just look at the betting line above, oddsmakers are barely giving Japan any chance at winning. Perhaps that’s less of a slight to Japan and more an acknowledgment of Switzerland’s skills cause they’ve dominated the entire tournament up until now. They’re 8-1 with the lone loss being a slim one-point defeat to Sweden. In the round-robin stage, Switzerland scored the second-most points (67) of the 10 qualifying teams and allowed the least points (46) too. This team is very much deserving of a -280 moneyline.
These two sides just played Thursday to include the round-robin stage. It was a back-and-forth affair, but the Swiss would ultimately gutted out a 8-4 win. Japan led 2-1 early on before Switzerland would overwhelm them — as they’ve done to most of the field. In eight wins so far, Switzerland’s average margin of victory is. 2.75 points. Domination, indeed.
As you can guess, we’re vouching for Switzerland as the bet to make here. That should set up a Switzerland and Britain final (the Swiss won 6-5 in first stage). And as we hinted earlier, we’re riding the Brits to victory in a game they should be underdogs in again. But hey, that just means more betting value for you!
