Norway-250

USA+700
Canada+800
Russia+1000

The Favorite: Norway (-250)

The most successful country at the 2018 Games, Norway set a record for most medals won by a nation at a single Winter Olympics with 39 total. The previous record was 37 set by the U.S. at the 2010 Games. The Norwegians also tied with Germany for the record for the most gold medals at a single Winter Olympics with 14 golds in 2018. Cross-country skier Marit Bjørgen was the star of the show, earning five medals in the female competitions. In fact, six Norwegian athletes would go on to win at least three medals each. With many athletes returning for 2022, Norway has a fantastic shot of repeating as overall champion.

Number Two: Germany (+300)

Placing second to Norway with 31 medals in total, including 14 gold, the Germans are poised for a strong repeat performance. In 2018, Germany excelled in ice track events (11 medals), biathlon (7), Nordic combined (5), and ski jumping (4). The men’s ice hockey team was also able to take home a silver medal in the team competition. Led by biathlete Laura Dahlmeier who won three total medals in 2018 (two gold and one bronze), Germany has its work cut out for itself if they want to unseat Norway.

Number three: USA (+700)

Coming off of its worst showing at the Winter Olympics since the 1998 Nagano Games, the U.S. has a big opportunity to bounce back in 2022. In 2018, the Americans ranked outside of the top three in both the gold (9) and total medal count (23) categories and finished fourth in both rankings. However, America did earn medals in at least one event in 11 different sports, which was the most of any nation. So while 2018 was certainly a setback year for the Americans, 2022 is shaping up to be a great opportunity for Team U.S.A. to bounce back.

Dark Horse contender: Canada (+800)

After placing third overall at the 2018 Games, the Canadians have an outside shot of going for the gold medal count. Canada is coming off its most successful campaign yet in terms of overall medals at a Winter Olympics. They won 29 in 2018, which surpassed their count of 26 won at the 2010 Winter Games.

Prediction: Though America still has to battle through aging, albeit tenured, roster of superstars retiring, the U.S. still has the firepower to take home a ton of gold medals. With the fire of disappointment fueling many of these athletes into 2022, America has a lot of opportunities to make some noise. Remember, the U.S. did bounce back in 2002 with 34 overall medals (good for second overall).
