One of the biggest team matchups at this year’s Olympics, the women’s ice hockey tournament will feature a top-heavy field. In the 2018 edition, the United States was able to bring home its first gold medal in the event since the 1998 Nagano Olympic Games. Canada finished as the runner-up in that event, its first time not winning the competition since 2002 and thus snapping their winning streak of Olympic gold medals. To round out the competition, Finland was recognized as the bronze medalists behind the two North American squads.
In a competition that will be watched closely throughout the games, the MTS team is here to give you a closer look into who might win it all. Check out the breakdown below with our prediction as well!

The Number One Contender: Canada (-120)
The most dominant squad in the history of women’s ice hockey at the Olympic Games, Canada will be looking to avenge their loss at the 2018 Games. Currently ranked as the No. 2 team in the world according to the IIHF World Ranking, the Canadians have a squad of battle-tested veterans that will make life hard for any team they face. Canada is currently led by the duo of Brianne Jenner and Blayre Turnbull who are both alternate captains with the team. However, the main attraction for the squad is captain Marie-Philip Poulin-Nadeau who famously scored the game-winning goal in the gold medal games of the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. Will Captain Clutch have more magic up her sleeve in 2022?
Number Two: USA (+100)
The main foes to Canada, in what will most likely be a two-team race, the U.S. women are consistent threats to make any international podium. Since the team’s inception back in 1990, America has been highly successful in international play, having won gold or silver in every major tournament aside from the 2006 Winter Olympics. Led by head coach Joel Johnson (his first ever Olympics as head coach), the Americans should have a manageable time in the opening stages until they have to contend with the Canadians. Captain Kendall Coyne Schofield will be one to watch as she already has a gold medal from the 2018 Games and will be relied on heavily to guide Team USA again.
Number three: Finland (+1800)
The bronze medal squad from the 2018 Games, Finland is looking for its first ever Olympic gold medal in women’s ice hockey. With a silver medal finish at the 2019 World Championships, the Fins have the pieces to get to the podium, but do they have the top-end power to push them over the edge? Head coach Pari Mustonen will be coaching in his second Olympic Games and his squads have claimed medals at three World Championships under his watch. Finland has a handful of solid players including IIHF Women’s World Championship Directorate award winners Jenni Hiirikoski (2019 Most Valuable Player) and Anni Keisala (best goalie in 2021).
Final contender: ROC (+3300)
The final team on our list, the ROC has an uphill battle to claim the gold medal. The Russians have never won a medal in women’s ice hockey, but this could be the year they turn the tide. Ranked as the consensus No. 4 team in the world, Russia last won a medal at the 2016 World Championships. If you are looking for a home run dark horse, Russia might be your best bet with a deck stacked against them ripe for a long shot payday.
Prediction: In a two-team race, the women’s ice hockey championship will most likely come down to a rematch between Canada and Team USA. In what should be another classic, look for a different outcome this time as Canada will take home the gold medal.
