The 2022 US midterm elections are fast approaching. Voters head to the ballots today November 8, 2022, in an election that could determine which party controls congress and perhaps even influence the decision of former US President Donald Trump on a run for the top office in the nation in 2024.
There are 35 seats up for vote in the Senate. Of those, Republicans hold 21. The 14 Senate seats that are up for grabs that Democrats have are in states that went for current President Joe Biden in 2020.
As for the House, all 435 seats are up for election in 2022. The Democrats hold 220 of those seats and the Republicans have 212. Three of the seats in the House are currently vacant.

Senate
The US Senate currently has 50 Republicans, 48 Democrats and two independents, both of which caucus with the Democrats. With 35 seats up for grabs in the 2022 Midterms, the Republicans are hoping to sway things to their side of the table after the election.
There are six main races to concentrate on in the Senate. In Arizona, Sen. Mark Kelly takes on Blake Masters. The race in Georgia is between Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker. While in Nevada, Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto faces Republican Adam Laxalt. The important open seat race in Pennsylvania is between Republican Mehmet Oz and Democrat John Fetterman. In Wisconsin, GOP Sen. Ron Johnson is running against Democrat Mandela Barnes and in New Hampshire, Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan faces Donald C. Bolduc.
Currently, the races in Nevada, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are very tight. While Arizona and New Hampshire are leaning to the Democratic side of the ticket.
House
If history tells us anything, it’s that midterm elections are not kind to the sitting President’s party. Historically, the President’s party loses 28 House seats during the midterms. In 2022, the Republicans need to flip a lot less than that to take control of the House for the next two years. It is very likely that the Republicans will control the House when the 2022 midterms come to a close.
The one thing that might hurt the Republicans in 2022 is the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade. A Pew Research poll conducted earlier this year said that 57 percent of those polled, regardless of political affiliation, disapproved of the court’s sweeping decision. The majority of those who disapproved did so “strongly” according to the poll.
It’s hard to tell how widely the Supreme Court decision will affect the House midterm votes, but going by history, things don’t look great for the Democrats in the House.
