With Mark Kelly holding onto his seat in Arizona, Catherine Cortez Masto keeping her seat in Nevada and John Fetterman winning in Pennsylvania, the Democrats clinched control of the Senate thanks to the tie-breaking vote that goes to Vice President Kamala Harris. However, one Senate race still has yet to be decided. That Senate vote that remains undecided is in Georgia.
The 2022 midterm vote in Georgia saw a three-person race between Ralph Warnock of the Democratic Party, Herschel Walker, who represented the Republicans and Chase Oliver of the Libertarian Party ended with Warnock getting 49.4 percent of the votes, Walker receiving 48.5 percent and Oliver picking up 2.1 percent. With none of the candidates hitting the 50 percent mark, the race goes to a runoff between the top two candidates. That runoff takes place on Tuesday, December 6.

2022 Georgia Midterm Results
The initial vote for the 2022 Georgia Senate seat, which Ralph Warnock held following his 2020 runoff win over Kelly Loeffler, was very close. Warnock got the most votes with 1,943,737, but Herschel Walker was very close to Warnock at 1,907,272. Meanwhile, Chase Oliver was a distant third with 81,278. Although Warnock had the most votes, he did not hit the state-mandated limit of 50 percent of the vote. With that, voters return to the polls in Georgia to vote in a runoff for the seat.

The runoff feels different now that the Democrats will have control of the Senate for the next two years. Heading into the midterms, the opinion on Warnock was that he is a future star for the Democrats. If he wins, Warnock will be the first Democrat in 30 years to win back-to-back Senate races in Georgia. He will also put himself in the position to be a potential candidate for President in 2028.
As for Walker, the feeling around the Republican party was that Walker was a means to an end. It seemed as if the Republicans’ goal was not to get Walker into the Senate but to keep the Democrats from controlling the Senate. With that race decided, some worry voters won’t be as inspired to get out and vote for the Republican candidate.

I think the most important part of this vote is that it will not decide Senate control. I believe that favors Warnock in that Republican voters who voted to gain Senate control more than to support Walker might not turn out for the runoff election. As for Democrats, I think they will have a reason to support their candidate because the 2024 Senate map is not favorable to the party. With that, the Democrats need to keep every seat they can when the 33 Senate seats go up for grabs in the 2024 election.
