There are any number of Republican candidates who might represent the party in the 2024 U.S. Presidential election. Some of those individuals include Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former vice president of the United States Mike Pence and governor of Virginia Glenn Youngkin. However, right now, close to two years before the Presidential election takes place on November 5, 2024, the two front runners for the Republican nomination are 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump and governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis.

Ron DeSantis
The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has emerged as a favorite among conservative members of the Republican party. The 44-year-old has yet to declare his candidacy. However, many see DeSantis throwing his hat in the ring as inevitable.
In a July 2022 poll from The New York Times / Siena College, DeSantis was the most popular alternative to Donald Trump for Republican voters. In a more recent poll from USA TODAY / Suffolk University, two-thirds of Republicans inclined to vote want DeSantis to run. Moreover, those polled preferred the Florida governor over the former president 56 percent to 33 percent.
DeSantis is seen as a strong leader who is not bothered by controversy. That was evident when he backed such items as restricting voting rights, Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law and politicizing critical race theory.
Donald Trump
The 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump, has already announced his plan to run for president in 2024. He made that announcement on November 15, 2022. Unfortunately, Trump’s popularity among conservative Republicans has fallen off since he left office in 2021. The 76-year-old is going to have a hard time regaining his base. As David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, told USA TODAY, “Republicans and conservative independents increasingly want Trumpism without Trump.”
The candidates Trump supported in the midterms did not fare well. Further, his role in the January 6, 2021, insurrection has not served him well among current voters.
One thing Trump has that might influence voters is charisma. And that could get voters to believe in him and his message.
Mike Pence
Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence, is in an interesting spot heading toward the 2024 Presidential election. When Pence failed to side with Trump on and after January 6, he lost a great deal of appeal to Trump supporters. However, Pence picked up some support from those who did not take to Trump’s role in the insurrection.
In a July poll, Pence tied for fourth with former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley for the Republican nominee for president in 2024. He trailed DeSantis, Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
At best, Pence, who has not declared his candidacy, is a long shot.
Our pick
If DeSantis runs, he will become the favorite the moment he makes that announcement. What will follow that announcement very quickly is Donald Trump‘s attempts to denigrate and decrease the appeal of his foe. That could work to sway some voters, but I don’t think Trump’s efforts wil pay off. The best bet to be the Republican candidate for president in 2024 is Ron DeSantis.
Pick: Ron DeSantis to be the Republican candidate for president in 2024.
