Biden Losing Ground to Harris on Odds to be 2024 Democratic Nominee

The next US presidential election is still almost 40 months away, but that has not prevented a continuing groundswell of speculation over who will be the Democratic Party’s nominee the next time Americans go to the poll. It currently remains a two-way race on the odds to carry the banner for the party founded by Andrew Jackson almost 200 years ago. Elected to the White House this past November, US President Joe Biden currently leads the way as the favorite to represent the Dems. However, with Biden set to turn 82 years old just days following the next election in November 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as a strong second favorite. But, as anyone who follows American politics knows, a lot can happen in three years, including the possible emergence of a new star in the Democratic Party, who could emerge as a more logical successor to Biden.

MyTopSportsbooks takes a look at how Biden and Harris have fared through their first six months in the White House, and potential dark horses to watch as the countdown to Election Day 2024 continues. Biden Remains the Man to Beat

After serving as US vice president during Barack Obama’s eight-year stint in the White House, Joe Biden capped his nearly 50-year career in US politics with his stunning upset victory over Donald Trump in last November’s US presidential election. In addition to becoming the oldest person ever elected president, Biden also broke new ground by choosing Kamala Harris, a woman of color, as his running mate.

The duo’s short time in the White House has not been without its struggles. In addition to facing accusations of voter fraud, the newly elected Leader of the Free World took office amid the COVID-19 pandemic and related rising unemployment. While the nation has made progress on both fronts, speculation continues as to just how long Biden will occupy the Oval Office. The former Delaware senator sparked a media furor when he was captured on video stumbling up the steps of Air Force One and has provided red meat to critics who question his health with a number of verbal slips while making public statements.

Despite all those challenges, Biden continues to lead the way as the favorite to be the Democratic Party nominee in 2024, sporting short +120 odds at Bovada. However, cracks have already started to appear in Biden’s support among oddsmakers, with Harris overtaking Biden as the favorite on the odds to win the 2024 election at BetUS, where she now sits as +350 chalk. And while the 78-year-old sports the shortest odds of all Democratic candidates to garner the party’s nomination, the odds of anyone other than Biden getting the net sit at -160 at Bovada.

Harris Closing the Gap on Presidential Odds

So, who are the most likely Democratic contenders to succeed Biden, and take on the Republican Party challenger in 2024. Not surprisingly Kamala Harris leads the way, with BetOnline offering the best odds at +200. The 56-year-old was tapped by Biden after he promised to select a woman as his running mate. However, questions remain as to Harris’ electability.

Harris enjoyed early success after declaring her candidacy for the presidency back in 2019, matching the impressive fundraising efforts of veteran candidate Bernie Sanders. However, her campaign quickly foundered, forcing her to withdraw almost three months before the Iowa Caucuses in February 2020.

Doubts Swirl Over Kamala’s Electability

The good news for Harris is twofold. With Biden’s health likely to fade as he ages, Harris is poised to take on a much larger role and enjoy a much higher profile than is typical for a vice president. In addition, there are few rivals within the Democratic Party who are currently well positioned to challenge the incumbents. That adds value to the strong +160 odds currently available at BetOnline of a woman becoming president in 2024.

The downside for both Harris and Biden is the very real prospect of the Democrats losing control of the House of Representatives in the 2024 mid-term elections. Republicans currently lead the way as -220 chalk to retake the House in 2022, which would make life miserable for both the current president and vice president, and open the door to challenges from rival Democrats.

Warren, Sanders Time has Passed

Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren currently represents the biggest threat, with odds as short as +750 of seizing the nomination. However, Warren faces challenges of her own. In addition to being 75 years old when Election Day rolls around, Warren faces the challenge of living down past scandals, most notably her previous false claim of having Native American ancestry.

Age is also a massive concern facing Bernie Sanders. The self-described democratic socialist will be 83 years old on Election Day, and considering the massive opposition he has faced from party insiders in his previous presidential bids, he is unlike to climb much from the +3300 odds he currently sports. Previously considered a golden boy of the party, the shine has also come off Andrew Cuomo in the wake of his questionable handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as New York governor, dumping him to a distant +6600.

Wily Klobuchar an Attractive Dark Horse

That opens the door for the senator from Minnesota Amy Klobuchar, who currently lurks behind the favorites as a +2500 bet. One of three women to receive delegate votes at the 2020 Democratic Convention, Klobuchar was widely considered a strong candidate to become Biden’s running mate before pulling her name from contention and encouraging Biden to select a woman of color.

Currently enjoying her third term in the Senate, Klobuchar brings considerable experience and vast political network to the game, and would represent a real threat to Harris should Biden choose not to seek re-election, making her very worthy of an early value bet.
