2021 Rugby Championship Week 6 Picks

The 2021 Rugby Championship comes to an end this weekend, and it’s fair to say it’s been an enthralling competition to date.

Last Saturday, we witnessed South Africa push New Zealand all the way in a breathless encounter at Townsville. And with the two sides meeting again this weekend, what chance a repeat?

Ultimately, the All Blacks came through the sternest of examinations, as they usually do.

Jordie Barrett kicked the high-pressure penalty that won the match for the All Blacks late on. It also confirmed New Zealand maintained their 100% record at this year’s championship, with just one match now remaining.

New Zealand has dominated the championship, and pretty much won it at a canter. Argentina will again pick up the wooden spoon, no matter what happens this weekend.

The only thing left to play for now is second place, between Australia and South Africa.

If Australia wins again against Argentina, there will be nothing South Africa can do. Even if Australia slips up, the Proteas will still need to beat New Zealand to steal second place.

And as South Africa found out last Saturday, that is a near on impossible task at the moment.

So let’s now take a look at the fixtures coming up this Saturday.

Argentina v Australia

  • Venue – Cbus Super Stadium, Robina, Queensland, Australia
  • Date – Saturday 2nd October 2021

Argentina +12+100+100
Draw+2800+2700
Australia -12-115-110

Last Saturday Australia completed a routine 27-8 win over Argentina.

This means the Wallabies now just need to beat Argentina again this Saturday to guarantee themselves a second-place finish in the table.

In 80 minutes on the Moneyline, Australia is -550 with Bovada to win their fourth successive match of the Rugby Championship.

A win – which would be their first of the championship – for Argentina is +400. With a drawn match at +2800.

With little value there, let’s take a look at the handicap spread.

Argentina has a +12 start on the handicap, and already they have drifted out from -110 to +100 in the last 24 hours.

A draw on the handicap is +2800, with Australia now backed in to -115 from a -12 start.

This is down in the main to the emphatic style with which Australia dismantled the Pumas in Townsville last Saturday.

At -115 with a -12 points handicap, Australia is my first Rugby Union betting pick of the weekend.

I wouldn’t hang around, as I don’t expect these odds to last for long.

South Africa v New Zealand

New Zealand - 9.5-115

In case you are thinking that this match is being played at the same venue as Argentina v Australia, so this must be a mistake. I can assure you, it’s not.

Since the competition was switched in its entirety to Australia, all the matches are now played back-to-back in the same venues.

And what a treat the folk of Robina are in for on Saturday in the second match.

Not since the rugby world cup was held in Australia back in 2003, have the venues outside of the major Aussie cities seen international fixtures of this quality.

And if this match is anything like last weekend’s it will be a classic.

South Africa did what they do best, they took the game to the All Blacks, and gave them a right bruising encounter.

The Springboks looked down and out after their back-to-back defeats to the Aussies, and most gave them no chance.

They ran New Zealand close all the way to the last second of the match. And up until Jordie Barrett kicked the 79th-minute winning penalty, the Springboks looked like pulling off a shock victory.

Sadly for South Africa, that was about as good a performance as they have managed for the whole competition. But it was too late, and the horse had already bolted by this time.

Their performance has seen the handicap shrink from 11.5 points last week, to 9.5 this week. And that’s better for us.

In 80 minutes of betting, top sportsbooks have New Zealand at -400. The draw is +2500 and a win for South Africa is +325.

I’m not going to bet on the 80 minutes market, I’m again looking at the handicap spread for my pick.

I firmly believe that last Saturday was South Africa’s cup final. They threw everything they had at the All Blacks, and still couldn’t beat them.

This week I think the All Blacks will be better for the experience, and I think they will beat South Africa with more to spare.

So I’m going to go for New Zealand to beat South Africa from a -9.5 handicap at -115 for my second rugby union pick of the weekend.
