Can Atlanta United Cap Off Homestand With Another Win?

It hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing for returning manager Tata Martino, but his first few games back in charge of the club should give fans no reason to give up on their boss yet. Martino arrives in Atlanta a year after stepping away from his role at Inter Miami “due to personal reasons.” Martino previously coached Atlanta United from 2016 to 2018, famously departing the club despite winning the MLS Cup in his last match as coach. The former Barcelona boss prefers a very entertaining, fan-friendly style of play involving high pressing and counter-attacking.

Right off the international break, Atlanta United will be tested at home yet again by the Columbus Crew. Atlanta United have been strong at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the US men’s national team will play Belgium and Portugal this weekend. A disappointing 3-2 loss in their home opener was vindicated with a statement victory over Philadelphia. With 4 points earned in their last two games, Atlanta United are now back in the playoff picture.

Six Atlanta United players will suit up during the international window for their respective nations. Miguel Almiron, Luke Brennan, Matías Galarza, Santiago Pita, Cooper Sanchez and Adyn Torres have all got call-ups and will be busy during the break, most of whom will represent U-20 or U-18 teams.

Columbus Crew Winless Through First Five MLS Matches

The Eastern Conference paints a very different picture for the Columbus Crew compared to their upcoming hosts. Columbus are winless through their first five matches under new manager Henrik Rydstrom. Beloved boss Wilfried Nancy departed the team to chase European glory with Celtic. Unfortunately, the former MLS Cup and Coach of the Year winner did not produce similar results in Scotland as he did in the United States. In fact, Nancy’s appointment is widely regarded as one of the worst coaching jobs in soccer history.

Nancy lasted just 33 days in charge of Celtic before he was sacked, managing just two wins in eight games. It will be 42 days since Rydstrom coached his first game with Columbus when his side takes on Atlanta United, and the results won’t be any better. But Columbus is a bit too deep into it now and will have to make do with what they got. They do have a sensational young forward in Wessam Abou Ali. The Moroccan international has been a lone bright spot for the Crew with 3 goals and an assist.

Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte will be in Atlanta this week after being called up by Mauricio Pochettino for USA’s pair of friendlies. It is unlikely, however, that Schulte will earn the starting goalkeeper job for USA during the World Cup. Even the backup role isn’t guaranteed with Matt Freese and Matt Turner both seemingly ahead of Schulte on the depth chart.

Atlanta United vs Columbus Prediction: Free Expert Betting Pick

It appears neither the sportsbooks nor the public has fully caught onto the demise of Columbus. This year’s Crew is nothing like previous years, with new leadership shaking up the squad and its play style. I’ll give Rydstrom the benefit of the doubt before making a verdict on his potential as a manager, but it’s clear this Columbus project is going to take some time before they get back to title contention.

We are five games into the season and Columbus haven’t won a game. Yet they are favorites on the road against an Atlanta United side that will be rested and haven’t traveled in over a month. Home underdogs in the MLS are already a profitable betting angle as it is. I think there is plenty of value on the hosts here, whether you like them on the moneyline, draw no bet, or Asian handicap markets.

I’ll take the quarter goal here and go with Atlanta United to at the very least earn a draw. This line has already moved since opening and I expect it to move further in Atlanta’s direction as smart bettors look to fade the winless Crew. We saw plenty of line movement reacting to recent performances last week so I am expecting more of the same in Matchweek 6.
