Who do Bettors Favor?

Checking out the best-rated online sportsbooks there’s a slight favoring of the home side Orlando in this match-up but sportsbooks are clearly wary of underestimating the visitors. City are rated as a +150 chance by some books, with Philadelphia priced around +190 and the draw at +230.

Orlando Grinding Out the Points

Oscar Pareja’s Orlando City are not the most impressive team to watch, but they are proving to be an effective unit, able to keep on grinding out the points to keep them in the top five.

Their last two MLS fixtures have provided a perfect illustration of their resilience, as they earned points on the road against Colorado and Atlanta. In the first they were on the back foot for much of the second half, but characteristically didn’t fold and came away with a deserved point. Against Atlanta at the weekend, in a game littered with bookings, they matched an improving team in a tough arena, scoring early and defending stoutly to earn another draw.

While their limited creativity and goal-scoring are clear weaknesses that could ultimately prove their downfall, there is no doubting their ability to stay in contention against any opponent and 14 of their 21 games so far in this season have been decided by a goal or fewer. Their style of play may not grab the attention, but it is effective and no team in MLS will relish taking them on.

Union Flying High

Whereas last year’s Eastern Conference (and ultimately MLS Cup) winners NYCFC haven’t always recaptured that form in 2022, the runners-up in the East from last year have carried on where they left off and going into this round of fixtures are flying high at the top of the table.

Philadelphia have only lost twice all season and they once again showed their tenacity against New England at the weekend as they fought back to score two goals in the last twenty minutes, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win that keeps them on top in the East.

While they haven’t been particularly fluent in front of goal, defensively Jim Curtin’s team have been extremely impressive, especially at home, where they have recorded five clean sheets so far this season. Part of the reason for this success is their busy and aggressive midfield play, which takes the pressure off the backline and the result is a goals-against stat that is the best in MLS. They haven’t conceded a first-half goal in any of their last six games and their goals-against record is six better than their nearest rival.

MLS Betting Team News

The team news for Orlando is a little better than it was ahead of their game against Atlanta at the weekend. Joao Moutinho and Adam Grinwis were both listed as questionable for that game, but both were on the bench in Atlanta and could be in line for a start here if Oscar Pareja wants to rotate his squad. Mason Stajduhar, however, is still out with a jaw injury and Gaston Gonzalez remains a long-term absentee after undergoing cruciate ligament surgery.

Javier Otero is a new face in the Orlando squad, having signed from Orlando City B, and is eligible for selection, so it will be interesting to see if Pareja gives him a chance.

Ahead of last weekend’s game, Jack Elliott was the only injury concern for Philadelphia, but if he has recovered from his sprained ankle, he could be involved here. Forward Cory Burke was back on the bench for the game against New England, but he has been in strong form lately, so may get the nod here ahead of Julian Carranza, although he has accumulated four yellow cards, so is at risk of suspension, along with left-back Kai Wagner.

MLS Match Betting Pick

The Eastern Conference is turning out to be a fascinating and open competition this season, but these are two of the best and most consistent teams in the East so we should be set for a gripping clash.

In terms of overall talent, Philadelphia has the edge, but home advantage levels things up a little, and Orlando will be confident of getting something out of this game, after a run of one win and two draws in which they’ve conceded only two goals.

Resolute defending and stubborn hard work are the defining qualities of these two teams, but neither are particularly prolific and that means goalmouth action could be minimal here. Low scoring, strong defensive teams tend to produce more than their share of draws and I think this game will finish honors even, so it’s best to side with the draw in the Match Betting markets.
