Barcelona vs Real Madrid Prediction: Who’s Favored to Win Copa del Rey?
Barcelona are the favorites to lift the trophy next weekend. La Blaugrana are backed by sportsbooks to the tune of (+112) to get the job done in 90 minutes. Real Madrid is pegged at (+225) to do the same, good for an implied probability to win of 30.8%. A draw is lined at (+283). That circumstance would trigger 30 minutes of extra time and penalties if necessary to break the deadlock.

Barcelona’s Treble Hopes Higher Than Ever
Still alive in the European, domestic and domestic cup title races, Barcelona is beginning to wonder if this year is their year. A lackluster end of 2024, mostly due to the absence of Lamine Yamal, dampened Barca fans’ spirits as the La Liga title picture began to swing heavily in Real Madrid’s favor. But a resurgence after the new year has made the Blaugrana considerable favorites to win the league. Now they meet their eternal rivals in the grand stage of the Copa del Rey.
Additionally, Barcelona advanced to the Champions League semifinal this week, where they will meet fellow treble-hopeful Inter. Barcelona easily took care of Dortmund after a 4-0 home victory in the first leg. The second leg went Dortmund’s way 3-1, but the cause was moot as Barcelona advanced 5-3 on aggregate. The imperfect performance was lamented by veteran talisman Robert Lewandowski, as it marked Barcelona’s first defeat in 25 games across all competitions.
Prior to the cup final against Real, Barcelona will have the chance to support their title ambitions with two home fixtures against Celta Vigo and Mallorca. Both sides are within the top 8 of the table but Mallorca has struggled mightily to score this calendar year. 6 points between those two and a slipup from Real could nearly lock up the championship in advance of the cup final. But even that hypothetical circumstance wouldn’t make much of a difference in the significance of an El Clasico.
Must-Win Match for Carlo Ancelotti?
While all is well and good in the Hansi Flick camp, whispers of discontentment at the apex of Real Madrid’s front office have made their way to the tabloid headlines. Carlo Ancelotti even referenced the rumors himself after the club’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of Arsenal. The Italian boss said it was “no problem” if he was replaced while demonstrating gratitude for his time in the Spanish capital. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and the prodigious Xabi Alonso have been linked to the position.
With a Champions League quarterfinal appearance already, along with a Copa del Rey final and a fight for the La Liga title around the corner, it’s hard to not feel as if Ancelotti’s potential sacking would be harsh. But Real Madrid demands silverware every year and with a tremendous amount of talent (even for their standards), it can be argued this season has been mildly disappointing. Perhaps Ancelotti, who has spent the last five years at the helm of Los Blancos, has overstayed his welcome. At any rate, he must focus on their two La Liga fixtures prior to another El Clasico at the end of the month.
Real Madrid is scheduled to face Athletic Club at home and Getafe away. Those both present sneakily difficult challenges. Getafe has the same goal differential (+3) as 6th-placed Real Betis and have conceded fewer goals than Real this season. Meanwhile, Athletic Club is in a tight race with Villarreal for the final Champions League qualification spot out of Spain.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid Prediction: Copa del Rey Betting Tips
Everybody loves El Clasico. And what better situation for Barcelona and Real Madrid to meet than in the final of the Copa del Rey? With silverware on the line and on neutral territory, the meeting will have an elevated feel compared to other editions of this fixture. It’s difficult to say who is the side from a betting perspective, and ultimately I’d have to agree with how the sportsbooks have lined the tie.
But the total odds are where I differ from bookmakers. I think there is a ton of value on the over here. The last eight meetings between Barca and Real have seen at least three goals, and 15 of the last 16. Of course, a cup tie can be a bit more cagey, but we have seen these two meet in cups and it certainly has not dissuaded scoring. Their last meeting was in the Spanish Super Cup, with Barcelona winning 5-2.
Real loves to get into high-flying, end-to-end types of matches and Barcelona’s tactics are quite conducive to that. Flick’s Barcelona draws more offsides than possibly every other club in Europa with an extremely high back line. As we saw in Barcelona’s 4-0 victory over Real Madrid last October, Real tried to counter often and got beat on the flanks.
My projections have the total at 3.5 goals, so with a half-goal of edge and plenty of historical success pointing in the same direction, I am confident in taking the over. Expect a high-scoring cup final to determine if Ancelotti earns some silverware or if Barcelona keep their treble hopes alive.
Odds are accurate at time of writing but subject to change.
