Vancouver Whitecaps News: Top of the Table

It’s been a joyous start to the new season for the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Pacific Northwest club has rattled over four straight victories in domestic play. That run makes them the only side in the MLS still with a perfect record. Vancouver’s only given up two goals in the process, bested only by St. Louis.

Interestingly, Vancouver midfielder Sebastian Berhalter will go face-to-face with his father Gregg on Saturday. Once cast off by Austin and brought along to Vancouver as a young prospect with little hope of playing time, Sebastian has blossomed. Now a bonafide starter for the Whitecaps, Berhalter will hope to lead his side to a win over his dad’s Chicago Fire. It should come as no surprise that Berhalter plays the number 8 position, a box-to-box “field general” role typical of a coach’s kid.

The U.S. Men’s National Team called upon the resources of Brian White for the Nations League Finals this week. That means Vancouver will have to do without their 29-year-old forward this weekend. White has been on quite the purple patch, scoring 3 goals in the CONCACAF Champions Cup along with another in league play and one for the USMNT. Each one of those goals were scored in victories for White’s side.

Chicago Fire New Stadium Potentially in the Works

Gregg Berhalter’s arrival must feel like a breath of fresh air for Chicago fans. A 1-0 deficit to FC Dallas with eight minutes to go is typically a bleak outlook for the “Men in Red,” but the script was flipped two weekends ago. The Fire scored three goals in quick succession and took that momentum into Toronto, making it back-to-back victories.

Berhalter isn’t the only change for Chicago this season. A state-of-the-art training facility and brand new marketing campaign have revamped the Fire’s internal and external presentation. What may soon follow is a new soccer-specific stadium, part of a long search for a new home since their departure from SeatGeek Stadium. Soldier Field has been their home since 2020, but owner Joe Mansueto has pledged to privately finance a new location.

Now on the final leg of their 3-match road trip, Chicago will look to outscore Vancouver and become the best offensive side in the country. Belgian striker Hugo Cypers has been a big part of this resurgence with 4 goals to his name. So too has been American midfielder Brian Gutierrez, but his contributions will be sorely missed as he accompanies White with the National Team. The next man up for the Fire in Gutierrez’s stead would be Sergio Oregel, a teenage academy talent.

Best MLS Bets: Vancouver vs Chicago

The unavailable players for each side cast a heavy shadow over this fixture. Chicago will need a lot from Oregel to keep from being dominated in the midfield, and Vancouver must look for other attacking options with White out. Both these sides have overperformed compared to preseason expectations, so which one is getting overrated?

According to my projections, it’s Vancouver. They opened up as (-164) favorites, a huge number for a side that barely made the playoffs last year. The Fire were quickly bought by sharps, bringing the line down to (-110). I have Vancouver projected at (+107).

Despite the edge, the “vigorish” makes it hard for me to recommend a play at the current price. There is still some value, but the edge is much less than it was at opening, and with the uncertain lineup, I don’t have confidence in backing Chicago to earn a win. Therefore, I have to stay away from making a pick. But if the line moves back a bit, I would consider taking Chicago.

In conclusion, look for Chicago +0.5 at even money or better. If you can get plus money on the Fire to earn a result, I think you are finding just enough value. But if all you want to do is get some money down to have fun while you enjoy some MLS action, then my lean is certainly on the Fire, so do with that information what you will. Best of luck, gamblers.
